She's more than ready to rise to the challenge of finding meaning in the messy web of human behaviour. Finally, our not-so-secret weapon is our new research and coordination fellow, Ikhlass. I am very excited to launch the last 2024 episode of #TheABCsofSBC podcast series. Having worked in the area of demand for #immunisation for more than a decade, this episode is very close to my heart. You might know this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Expanded Programme of Immunization (#EPI), a global initiative to get vaccines to every child, everywhere. While much progress has been made over the last 50 years, there is still much more work to be done to ensure equitable access to vaccines for all. I may have [13 Across] but my favourite part of UNICEF’s newest magazine is the Crossword. Some might argue that there are far more important pieces in the magazine, such as the case study on page 36 that dives in to [8 Down] for parenting in Nepal by Swechhya Shrestha, or page 16 where my co-founder Sherine Guirguis writes about how [6 Down] and Behaviour Change needs to be more like [19 Across], or even Vincent Petit’s article about why strengthening [4 Down] isn’t the key to crisis preparedness, but a strong foundation of trust is. But to really understand any of the above, you kind of need to see the Crossword, don’t you? 😏 This is what the magazine aims to do - give experts and non-experts alike a fun way to learn about Social and Behaviour Change, understand how it evolved to what it is today, and how it can continue evolving to tackle the complex global challenges that lie ahead. What can caregivers teach us about immunisation? A lot. They are the ones in charge of making sure the children they look after get the vaccines they need. They have to remember appointments, figure out transportation to and from the clinic, and interact with health workers to get answers to their burning questions. That’s why we’re working with UNICEF Haiti researchers to interview caregivers in Southern Haiti. They’re testing out the human-centered research protocol we helped UNICEF Latin America and Caribbean develop, with tools that help practitioners collect and analyse social and behavioural insights. They're using these tools to figure out things like what's keeping caregivers from returning to the clinic after their first visit and what could make their vaccination experience more positive. We’ll use their findings, along with data from other countries throughout the region, to find patterns, zero in on the most salient immunisation challenges, and provide recommendations so that future immunisation programmes are designed with the needs of caregivers, and their little ones, in mind. This magazine explores the unravelling of that thinking and the growing embrace of something more community-led, evidence-informed, people-centred, equity-driven, bottom-up, de-colonial — need we say more? Of course. And we have. We filled the magazine with case studies, perspectives and lessons learned from people all over the globe who have been applying SBC, advocating for it, and uncovering its potential to respond to the challenges that lie ahead. In Kenya, over a quarter of hospital visits are related to psychological issues. Yet, less than 1% of the National Health budget is allocated to mental health.
