The green hills of #Bangladesh are home to 167 commercial 🫖 tea estates, including some of the largest active tea plantations in the world. The hard-working Bangladeshis who pick this tea are generally low-paid and face poor living conditions, including a lack of access to quality health care facilities. That includes insufficient eye health care resources in tea-growing regions, which leaves tea pickers and their families vulnerable to preventable or treatable vision loss. Orbis International has been working in Bangladesh since 1985 providing eye care and eye care training for communities around the country. With assistance from our generous supporters, we recently teamed up with local eye care partner, Nayan, to address the eye health issues of tea garden workers and their families in one of the country’s traditional tea-growing areas. Changing the way the world sees.
About us
Millions of people go blind each year, and millions more suffer from poor vision, simply because they cannot access the kind of care many of us take for granted. It is estimated that more than 253 million people in the world are blind or visually impaired, but a staggering 80% of those people suffer from conditions that are treatable, curable or preventable. Orbis is an international non-profit organization that brings people together to fight avoidable blindness and restore vision. We strengthen and improve eye health systems by partnering with local hospitals, public health agencies, NGOs and governments. With our network of partners, we mentor, train and inspire local teams so they can save sight in their communities, and transform lives through the prevention and treatment of blindness. Using our unique tools – over 400 expert volunteers, our Flying Eye Hospital and our online telemedicine tool, Cybersight – we equip developing nations with the skills, resources and knowledge to deliver quality eye care to their communities.

Recently, our board member and President of the Orbis Future Vision Leaders, Dominique Geoffrion, MD, CM, PhD, took part in an Orbis Flying Eye Hospital program in Bangladesh. Dr. Geoffrion Served as an Associate Ophthalmologist and led the simulation training in cataract surgery at the local hospital (Chittagong Eye Infirmary and Training Complex - CEITC) For her, witnessing the Orbis team members interact with such the camaraderie, dedication, and collective effort to improve global eye health was profoundly inspiring.
