Updates

  • Our Executive Director, Ann de Ste Croix, spoke with Jeff Douglas on CBC Mainstreet to discuss the ongoing epidemic of intimate partner violence in Nova Scotia, and the supports provided by THANS' 12 member organizations. "This year, THANS member organizations supported approximately 4600 women and children experiencing violence, and that number is expected to increase to 5000 by the end of 2024, as there is typically an increase in demand for services around the holidays" Listen Here: https://lnkd.in/eGU-eKrE

  • Data collection ends on December 15th. If you work within the GBV sector in Nova Scotia, in any capacity, please consider participating: https://lnkd.in/dvshErRs

The THANS office, in collaboration with the Nova Scotia Gender-Based Violence Sector Coordination Group, invites those working in the GBV sector in the province to participate in a sector-wide needs assessment survey. This survey is anonymous, and your participation and feedback will guide future advocacy efforts and help strengthen collaboration across the province. If you would like to participate, please visit: https://lnkd.in/dvshErRs

November 25th marks the first day of the #16daysofactivismagainstgenderbasedviolence and is also International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Violence against women, girls and gender non-binary people remains one of the most prevalent and pervasive human rights violations in the world. NS has among the highest rates of intimate partner violence in the country, yet less than 2% report to police. We are home to the largest and most fatal mass shooting in the country. And in the last month alone there have been 3 #femicides in NS. GBV advocates, community organizations, academics, government partners and survivors are working on it. But we cannot do it alone. An epidemic level problem needs epidemic level priority, attention and funding. And it needs a collaborative, society-wide response - inclusive of all sectors, the private sector, all levels government, and men. Help #EndGBV by: 💜 wearing a purple ribbon to raise awareness about violence against women, girls, & gender non-binary people, 💜 start conversations within your sectors, workplaces, communities, about changing the current culture of tolerance of violence against women, 💜 ask your elected officials at all levels of government what they are doing to address GBV in their realms of influence, and 💜 donate to local community based resources who are work to prevent and respond to GBV, especially those who serve marginalized populations. We all have a role to play to #EndGBV.

  • Ahead of the 2024 Nova Scotia elections, we analyzed party platforms on 9 key issues affecting gender-based violence (GBV), including justice, housing, education, and healthcare. Overall, we found: ➡ No commitments to decolonization, TRC Calls to Action, or MMIWG2S Calls for Justice. ➡ No commitment to epidemic-level funding for the GBV sector as recommended by the Mass Casualty Commission. ➡ Lack of justice reform, especially for the Domestic Violence Intervention Act. ➡ Liberals and NDP proposed inclusive anti-poverty measures, but gaps remain. We also conducted a Q & A with each major party on issues related to intimate partner violence.
