During the Regional Humanitarian Partnership Week 2024, Sphere, Plan International, and Rumah Zakat hosted a session on **Taking Care of Nature: Scaling up Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in Asia**. William Anderson emphasised on how NbS can address pressing social, economic, and environmental challenges while enhancing resilience and biodiversity. 💡 "Nature-based Solutions are about protecting, conserving, and restoring ecosystems to tackle challenges effectively while benefiting people and the planet,” shared William, “Simply put, NbS reflects the deep interaction between people and nature.” 🔑 Key Insights: ➡️ Sphere’s Handbook will integrate NbS guidance in its revision. ➡️ Locally-led adaptation is essential for solutions that align with the unique knowledge and priorities of communities. ➡️ Women's inclusion is essential to address social and gender dimensions effectively. Let’s work together to integrate NbS into humanitarian action, ensuring that people and nature thrive together. #RHPW2024 #NatureBasedSolutions #Resilience #Sphere #ClimateAdaptation

🌏 Sphere at the EOI session on “From Universal Standards to Contextualised Application: Quality + Accountability + Safeguarding in Action” during RHPW 2024 During the session, William Anderson highlighted the importance of contextualising humanitarian standards to empower communities and ensure effective implementation. He shared insights about Sphere’s upcoming Contextualisation Guide, which will provide practical tools to adapt global standards, like the Sphere Standards, to local realities. The session also called for a critical reassessment of values like impartiality, urging a shift toward fair and equitable aid distribution. By addressing internal challenges, the sector can move closer to a truly people-centred approach. #SphereStandards #Contextualisation #EquityInAid #Localisation #RHPW2024 Community World Service Asia
The humanitarian sector is facing a "midlife crisis" due to its failure to adapt to changing circumstances and internal issues like competition and politicisation. A session “From Universal Standards to Contextualised Application: Quality + Accountability + Safeguarding in Action!” organised by CWSA and Sphere, addressed this by emphasising the need to: • Prioritise context: Adapt universal standards like Sphere Standards to local realities for effective implementation. • Re-evaluate impartiality: Focus on equitable distribution over neutrality, especially in complex situations. • Promote collaboration: Overcome competition and promote shared understanding within the sector. • Empower local actors: Strengthen community-based responses through localisation. Key takeaways included the importance of people-centered QAS, building trust with communities, addressing power imbalances, and ensuring flexibility in funding and interventions. The session highlighted the need for a shift towards a more holistic and inclusive approach to humanitarian assistance. Persistent challenges like stigma and inflexible funding were acknowledged, underscoring the need for trust-based, equal partnerships. These discussions reaffirm the power of local solutions to drive global change. Community World Service Asia ICVA Network #Locallyled #Localsolutions
Day 1 of #RHPW2024 explored diverse themes including inclusive partnerships, capacity sharing, innovation x faith, localising climate justice, and humanitarian diplomacy. The discussions highlighted: • Need for equity through community-based approaches, data segregation to understand the needs of marginalised groups, empowering local communities to lead humanitarian efforts. • Challenges such as stigma, lack of flexible funding, and donor-driven complexities were acknowledged and the need for trust-based, equal partnerships to overcome these barriers was emphasised. • Intersection of faith and innovation, showcasing volunteer-led initiatives that address medical and financial needs despite human resource constraints. • Climate justice conversations underlined the importance of localised data and contextual understanding to navigate crises, adapt, and thrive. • Humanitarian diplomacy focused on addressing displacement driven by climate change and resource scarcity, advocating for frameworks to enhance negotiations and collaborations with governments and military actors. These discussions set the stage for actionable, inclusive, and context-sensitive solutions in humanitarian work.
