Ethiopia hosts more than 1 million #refugees and 4.3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) with most living in camps and levels of energy access for these areas remain very low. This indicates the urgent call to action in providing sustainable energy solutions like solar power to turn this profound crisis into an opportunity for resilience. Meanwhile the country’s first private company implemented a 254 kWp #Solar #minigrid project for Sheder camp, Somali Region, which will bring power to more than 17,000 refugee households and businesses and this provides an example of the potential for solar private companies to engage in displacement settings. Greater investment will be required to match the scale of the needs of displaced people and host communities. This report developed by the Global Platform for Action in partnership with Mercy Corps. Revisiting our publication on “The National Roadmap for Scaling Up Productive Use of Renewable Energy in Ethiopia.” Ethiopian Solar Energy Development Association (ESEDA), the Ethiopian Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE), and Global association for the off-grid solar energy industry (GOGLA) with a financial support from Germen federal Ministry for economic cooperation and development (BMZ) and EU through the international initiative water and energy for food (WE4F) developed “The National Roadmap for Scaling Up Productive Use of Renewable Energy in Ethiopia.” The roadmap is set to revolutionize the country's energy landscape and outlines key strategies to overcome barriers and promote the adoption of renewable energy technologies. 𝗘𝗦𝗘𝗗𝗔 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽𝘀 𝗟𝗮𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗱: 𝗔 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽. We’re excited to share that #ESEDA, in partnership with #Endev-GIZ and #PowerforAll, hosted a successful Workgroups Introductory #Workshop on October 31, 2024. This event brought together three dedicated workgroups to address critical challenges in Ethiopia’s solar energy sector. Each group focused on specific themes, identifying key gaps and proposing innovative solutions. The energy and enthusiasm during the workshop were inspiring, setting the stage for future initiatives and actions. As we move forward, the workgroups will continue to meet regularly and collaborate to achieve their goals. A comprehensive next steps plan has been established to ensure seamless follow-up and progress tracking. 📣 Announcement "Strength in collaboration”, by joining forces and collaboration with esteemed solar associations in Kenya, Rwanda, and China, ESEDA is lighting the path toward a solar energy future that benefits all. We are pleased to share that our association ESEDA has entered into a strategic #partnership #agreement with prominent renewable energy association from #China and this initiative made under the "China-Africa Partnership for Sustainable Investment in Renewable Energy Charter," marks a significant step towards advancing sustainable energy solutions across the continent. Following the agreement, our Chair woman Hawi Tesfaye representing ESEDA, participated in the "Third Belt and Road Energy Ministerial Conference" in Qingdao, China which aimed to brought together regional and national renewable energy associations with a shared goal of driving impactful change in the renewable energy sector and ESEDA's participation in this conference underscores a commitment to fostering sustainable investments and development in the Ethiopia's solar energy sector. #Partnership

𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬 The newly signed agreement project called “𝑪𝒍𝒊𝒎𝒂𝒕𝒆-𝒓𝒆𝒔𝒊𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒕𝒚 𝑨𝒄𝒄𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝑺𝒂𝒇𝒆 𝑾𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑷𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒓𝒆𝒅 𝒃𝒚 𝑹𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒘𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑬𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒈𝒚 𝒊𝒏 𝑫𝒓𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕-𝒗𝒖𝒍𝒏𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒃𝒍𝒆 𝑹𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝑬𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒐𝒑𝒊𝒂,” holds immense potential for the country. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬:- 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭: to implement solar-powered water pumping systems alongside efficient irrigation techniques to address Ethiopia’s drought-prone regions (Amhara and Oromia), particularly the Kobo-Girana Valley and the Borena Zone, which are facing mounting challenges due to climate change, Increasing temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, and prolonged droughts significantly affecting the agricultural productivity and water availability of communities making the region highly vulnerable. 𝐓𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞: 50 million (USD 45 million from the Green Climate Fund and USD 5 million in co-financing from the Government of Ethiopia). 𝐄𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬: more than 355,000 direct beneficiaries. 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞𝐥: The initiative aims to foster sustainable water usage practices nationwide, demonstrate a community-led water management model that integrates traditional techniques, and strengthen local institutional capacity to scale the deployment of clean energy solutions.
