As part of the #AIActionSummit, our AI Engineer Thierry Danse discussed the environmental impact of Generative AI at the OECD-OCDE. Key insights: 🌐 AI unlocks new decarbonization opportunities: For instance, CO2 AI's customer Reckitt has increased by 75x the accuracy of its emissions measurement and identified new initiatives to halve its Scope 3 emissions. ↗️ AI's growing footprint: While AI models contribute a small fraction to a company's total carbon footprint, their impact grows rapidly due to increasing usage. Accurate measurement is crucial for optimization. 🦁 Inference take the lion's share: AI inference, the process of making predictions with trained models, accounts for 70% of a model's carbon emissions, according to Meta. 🌱 How to optimize environmental impact: - Model footprints vary significantly. For example, reasoning models like OpenAI's o3 consume 17-60 times more energy than GPT-4 and 200-600 times more than GPT-3.5. - Smaller models, such as Mistral Small, are emerging, offering cost-efficiency for tasks like translation, summarization, and sentiment analysis. - Companies should optimize data pipelines, using models suited to specific tasks and considering cost as a proxy for environmental impact. What's next? There's still little data on the energy use of AI models, which varies by architecture, usage, and data center location. CO2 AI advocates for increased transparency from AI labs and ask that they share precise, standardized emission factors to enable informed, sustainable decisions. #Sustainability #AI #ClimateAction #TechForGood #OECD

🌍 Kicking off 2025 with action on Scope 3! Last week, CO2 AI participated in the Scope 3 Peer Group Strategy Day in London, where industry leaders came together to define priorities for driving real decarbonization. Our CEO Charlotte Degot attended the event, and the discussions reinforced the urgent need for collaboration, focus, and innovation to tackle Scope 3 emissions effectively. Here are our five key takeaways from the event: 1️⃣ Reaffirm the business case for carbon action – Sustainability is under more scrutiny than ever. Businesses must put a clear value on carbon, stay focused, and publish progress with confidence. 2️⃣ Be ruthlessly focused on impact – Identifying, prioritizing, and incentivizing action on key substances, materials, and suppliers is critical to making real progress. 3️⃣ Collaboration is the way forward – Industry-wide cooperation and supplier engagement are key to decarbonization. Industry-specific coalitions like TfS – Together for Sustainability will drive real impact. 4️⃣ Technology & AI will accelerate decarbonization – Investing in the right tools is essential for scale and speed. Companies using AI for emissions reduction are already seeing 4.5x better results. 5️⃣ Procurement must lead the charge – Carbon must be a factor in RFPs, negotiations, and decision-making.
