  • Africa's future depends on the transformative power of higher education – but many barriers remain. With only 9% of African youth enrolled in higher education, compared to a global average of 40%, the continent faces critical challenges such as limited access, infrastructure gaps and insufficient alignment with labour market needs. In 2024, as the African Union celebrated the Year of Education, UNESCO led efforts to address these barriers and unlock Africa's potential. With 75% of Africans under the age of 35, the younger generation holds immense promise to drive economic growth, innovation and sustainable development – if equipped with the right skills. UNESCO organized major events focusing on STEM education, especially for girls, and on strengthening higher education systems to better prepare students for the future. Initiatives, such as the UNESCO-China Funds-in-Trust project, are equipping learners with market-relevant skills and fostering innovation. At the same time, improved quality assurance mechanisms are helping institutions ensure excellence and relevance. Equity and inclusion remain central to these efforts, aiming to reach underrepresented groups such as women and marginalized communities. As Africa's young population continues to grow, investing in education is essential for transforming the continent and empowering its youth to build a better future. Millions of girls and women around the world are denied their right to education. Gender inequality, poverty, early marriage and gender-based violence are just some of the barriers that keep them out of school and prevent them from reaching their full potential. Globally, women still account for two-thirds of all illiterate adults—a stark reminder of the urgent need for change. UNESCO's Her Atlas is a powerful tool that sheds light on the reality of girls' and women's education around the world. It maps progress, highlights persistent challenges and provides key data to guide advocacy and action for gender equality in education. Education is a human right. Let's work together to ensure that every girl and woman has the opportunity to learn, grow and contribute to a better world. Explore Her Atlas: https://shorturl.at/kZq9I
