Building Policies for a Better World
À propos
The Global Buildings Performance Network (GBPN) is a globally organised and regionally focused organisation whose mission is to provide policy expertise and technical assistance to advance building energy performance and realise sustainable built environments for all. The GBPN is working to achieve a world in which buildings are a solution to climate change and a source of societal well-being. The GBPN was founded in 2010 with the mandate to advance knowledge and expertise globally on building energy performance and the structure to achieve it. It is coordinated by a global centre based in Paris, and is represented regionally with an office in Beijing, and partner organisations in Brussels, Washington D.C. and Delhi helping achieve the transformational changes required in the building sector to tackle climate change while promoting economic and social well-being. The GBPN has developed extensive partnerships with international organisations, govenerments, industries, research institutes and NGOs. Our project partners also extend our reach to South East Asia, while our experts network includes Latin American and African expertise. The GBPN assists governments and industry policy makers to identify, adapt and implement policy best practices for low-energy, affordable and healthy buildings, contributing to low carbon and resilient cities. Our mission is to provide intelligence to optimize building energy policies and accelerate net zero energy or positive energy for new buildings, deep renovation for existing buildings, and integrated renewables. Our activities include capacity building for implementation, policy analysis and validation, and sharing of knowledge, data and best practices between regions.

Energy Innovation Policy and Technology LLC's electrification expert Sara E. Baldwin hypes our new global #heatpump policy toolkit in her Forbes column! 🎉 The toolkit provides a complete roadmap 🗺 for smart policy to scale fossil fuel-free heating, from customer rebates to building codes to innovative clean heating standards. And it now includes new case studies from cities, regions, and countries that are effectively making the switch, so other policymakers can quickly get up to speed on how to deliver clean, affordable heating (and cooling!) to all of their residents. Sara's article provides a sampling of some of the great content in the toolkit! 🚨 OUT TODAY! 🚨 The latest version of our heat pump toolkit has just launched! Version 2.0 of “A policy toolkit for global mass heat pump deployment" was officially unveiled today at #COP29 in Baku during the “International Collaboration on Clean Heating” event at the UK Pavilion. Thanks to lead author Dr Richard Lowes for making the announcement! This is the second version of the toolkit; we launched the original version in 2022 as the global #heatpump market began to grow. And while growth continues, progress isn’t where it needs to be. Just like the original, the updated report underscores the importance of comprehensive policy packages that include economic reforms, financial support for building owners, and strong regulatory frameworks, all built on coordinated communication. Achieving the necessary levels of heat pump deployment to meet global climate targets depends on this alignment. Without well-coordinated, robust support, the ambitious goals set out in climate agreements may remain out of reach. Version 2.0 also contains new material, including a chapter on equity, and a chapter featuring case studies highlighting heat pump policy support from several countries based on the toolkit structure. Still available this year is our video series that we produced during the first iteration of the toolkit. It's well worth checking out and sharing with friends and colleagues. https://lnkd.in/e5BHKuJb This toolkit came together from a successful partnership between the Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP), CLASP, Global Buildings Performance Network (GBPN), Agora Energiewende and the Crux Alliance. Congratulations to the authors and editors who helped put this together. Of note, thanks for Noble Studio for another wonderful layout. Very excited to share that our Heat Pump Toolkit has been given a makeover, updated with new case studies and was published today! 🔥 https://lnkd.in/e3mdGEbk Led by Dr Richard Lowes, the toolkit provides detailed advice on designing policies for rapid heat pump uptake. We find that a comprehensive policy approach is the most effective. That means tacking regulation, pricing, economic instruments together and not in isolation. So many heat pumps are needed to reach net-zero. In this case, according to the IEA, we calculated that based on current trends, we are falling around 2500 GW short. We added some new case studies in this version, so you can dive into specific measures taken by countries, and some states and provinces. All countries, not just those we looked at in the Toolkit, have adopted a rather piecemeal approach to heat pump policy. Not comprehensive enough. ALSO: We prepared a bunch of videos that give an easy introduction to how heat pumps works, their benefits, and the different policy levers. Please share with friends and family! https://lnkd.in/eUgZiuJT Thanks to our partners at Agora Energiewende, CLASP, Global Buildings Performance Network and all our Regulatory Assistance Project (RAP) colleagues and reviewers. https://lnkd.in/e3mdGEbk
