[Special Report|Coastal Risks] 🌊 In the Mediterranean coastal zone, present actions towards solutions to environmental challenges, adaptation to climate change and its mitigation are insufficient to attain the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensure the well-being of people and the sustainability of resources. 👉 1/3 of the population lives close to the sea and depends on infrastructure and economic activities in its immediate vicinity. Here is how climate and environmental drivers of change are affecting the Mediterranean ecosystems: 🔴 Sea level will rise even more (by a metre by the end of the century), condaming infrastructure such as ports and potentially leading up to 20 millions of people to move in the years to come. 🔴 Frequency of marine heatwaves has increased by 40% over the last two decades and will continue to do so, affecting many Mediterranean coastal species. 🔴 Sea surface waters pH has dropped -0,1 units and is expected to decrease up to -0,6 units, indicating a massive acidification of the sea and a big threat to marine biodiversity. 🔴 Air temperature in the Mediterranean has already risen by +1,5°C in 2020 and, with the current emissions path, could reach +2,9°C by mid-century. Regarding these figures and many more, our new report assesses environmental and climate change hazards in the coastal zone and the related risks in the Mediterranean, as well as adaptation options and solutions. 💡 Building resilience in coastal communities will especially require involving all the relevant stakeholders to ensure that solutions are tailored, to reduce inequalities to create inclusive and effective pathways, and economic and political stability alongside locally-adapted, circular and resilient development models. 👉 Consult and download the summary for policymakers here (full report coming soon) 🔽 https://lnkd.in/e7qsmWj8 🔊 We presented the report in a side event of the COP 29.

[Special Report|Climate Wefe Nexus] ❗ More than seven years after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda and its 17 SDGs, Mediterranean countries still face major sustainability challenges like water scarcity, food and energy insecurity and ecosystems degradation, all deeply interconnected. Addressing these issues requires moving away from silo approaches, as we can no longer afford to tackle each problem in isolation when they are so intricately linked. 👉 That is what our new special report is about: exploring the complex relationships between water, energy, food, and ecosystems in the context of environmental change in the Mediterranean with a nexus approach. Acting simultaneously on those 4 pillars is crucial. 👉 For example, cascading from the water pillar 💧, we can see how everything is related: water scarcity, due to droughts, reduce agriculture yields (food pillar 🥗) and lead to a strong decline in hydropower and thermoelectric power usable capacity (energy pillar ⚡), while the acidification of the sea lead to loss of habitat for aquatic species (ecosystem pillar 🌱). In this report, you will find out more about those connections and the key principles of the nexus approach. 👉 Consult and download the full report and the summary for policymakers here 🔽 https://lnkd.in/ef-z6e_7 🔊 Find the replay of our presentation of the report at a side event of the COP 29 here🔽 https://lnkd.in/e85MvJKM It's essential that policymakers aim to enhance the resilience of WEFE systems. It's not too late to act: in the report, we address adaptation and mitigation solutions, both incremental and transformative, which will be key to access a sustainable future. 👉 Among them: the nature-based solutions, a systemic approach for policies, agroecological management practices… 🙏 It's a great collaborative effort with more than 60 experts. 🌍 This week was the launch of our two new Special Reports on climate and environmental change in the Mediterranean, at the COP 29 in Baku! With the Union for the Mediterranean, we held a press conference to present the result of the collaborative work of a team of leading experts and scientists: 👉 A report on the interlinks between climate change and the WEFE (Water/Energy/Food/Ecosystems) nexus in the Mediterranean Basin, available here 🔽 https://lnkd.in/ef-z6e_7 👉 A report on climate and environmental coastal risks in the region, available here 🔽 https://lnkd.in/e7qsmWj8 Monday, Piero Lionello and Mohamed ABDEL MONEM, scientists and co-coordinators of the reports, presented the key findings 🔽 https://lnkd.in/eDuxa97b We will develop the findings of the reports in further posts, but here are few things about the Mediterranean region: 🔴 It is a climate hotspot, facing above-average warming, water scarcity and ecosystem degradation. threatening food and energy security. 🔴 1/3 of the population lives in close vicinity to the sea and more than 20 million people could be affected by permanent displacement due to sea level rising. You can find more about it on the Coastal Risks report while the WEFE nexus one examines the links between climate change and its effects on water, energy, food and ecosystems, as everything is closely intertwined. 🤝 We need to make the difference and technological, nature-based solutions and behavioural adaptation strategies are available, but timely actions and a transformative approach are fundamentals! With that in mind, we hope that our reports will be a great tool to all and especially policymakers. 🙏 We would like to thank all of the people involved, who contributed their time and expertise 🔽 👉 MedECC coordinators, Report coordinators and MedECC secretariat: Joel Guiot Wolfgang Cramer Fatima Driouech Kasia (Katarzyna) Marini Julie Gattacceca Piero Lionello, Carmen Llasat Salpie Djoundourian Philippe Drobinski Marta Guadalupe Rivera Ferre Mohamed ABDEL MONEM 👉 Chapters coordinators: Anna Pirani Augustin Sanchez-Arcilla Murat Belivermis Dario Camuffo Selmin Burak Nathalie Hilmi José A.
