𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬? 2024 has been a challenging year for sustainability, with many companies delaying or diluting their climate commitments, often due to implementation complexities. But what if there was a way to evaluate, and strengthen the readiness of your organization to meet its climate goals? Enter the 𝐌𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐀𝐂𝐓 𝐅𝐚𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐋𝐮𝐱𝐮𝐫𝐲, 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐬, 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐮𝐦) – a tool developed by PARIS GOOD FASHION and ADEME with the support of le DEFI La Mode de France and numerous brands. This methodology evaluates companies across nine critical areas – from target setting to supplier engagement and innovative business models – providing clarity on where the gaps are and how to address them. The Methodology Act has been tried and tested with over 2000 companies across 15 sectors since its creation in 2015. 📊 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐚𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐡, 𝐰𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 15 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐬. 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐚𝐥? While the fashion sector performs on par with others, there is an urgent need to: - 𝐒𝐞𝐭 𝐚𝐛𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞 3 𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬 and improve emissions data accuracy. - 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐧𝐠 to align sustainability with business accountability. - 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 across manufacturing, product durability & repair, and recycling infrastructure. - 𝐒𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 to decouple growth from resource consumption. 🌍 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭? Paris Good Fashion will work on developing a decarbonisation trajectory for the sector, launching in 2025. More research into decoupling strategies to redefine growth and success is needed, something I will increase my focus on with Swanstant. When you think of biodiversity, what comes to mind? 🪸 It’s beautiful, 🌱 Delicate yet resilient, 🐝 And vital to sustaining life on Earth. So, you’d be forgiven for thinking it would be tough to accurately measure your impact on it! Well, we’ve got some great news for you - 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁, 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱, 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱. We measure biodiversity impacts in terms of 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 of species (PDF). This academically-preferred metric quantifies the annual global species extinction risk resulting from a company’s operations. We also present PDF as 𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘃𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁, measured in km²– think of it as the amount of pristine nature transformed into an urban area. 🖼️ What’s more, we evaluate a company’s dependencies on all 25 ecosystem services listed in the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) (e.g. Air Filtration and Pollination). We rank these dependencies using the widely-known ENCORE system, giving you a complete picture of how your company impacts biodiversity. ☝️𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗲𝗹–𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮. “Volumes keep going up and the overall value has been going down, it was just a question of time before we reached a breaking point.” I had the opportunity to share my thoughts with The Business of Fashion on the crisis brewing in fashion recycling, amplified by the joint statement from EuRIC - The European Recycling Industries and MUNICIPAL WASTE EUROPE last week. We simply cannot justify the existence of a model by the amount of pre-consumer waste it avoids, we have to look at the full picture of how much value-less waste it is pushing into the system. The answer to these challenges lies probably in a mix of volume and quality control at the gate, extended producer responsibility to support the development of a vibrant post-consumer market in Europe, that favours actual reuse both locally and globally, while accelerating the development of a recycling industry in strategic European locations.
