Is it possible to treat PFAS present in water and waste? At Veolia, the answer is yes! We are able to manage #PFAS pollution end-to-end with concrete and replicable solutions ⤵ 🦠 PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are synthetic chemicals of industrial origin that can be found almost everywhere in our daily life. These highly persistent micropollutants pollute #water and soil, and are extremely slow to degrade in the #environment. So, what are the possible treatments? 💧 For water: ▪ Active carbon filtration systems: one of the most commonly used solutions. Water passes between grains of carbon, which has been activated to have a porous surface, able to attract and capture certain types of PFAS. ▪ Small resin beads: it can similarly be used as an alternative to carbon. ▪ High performance membrane filtration: pressurised water circulates through extremely thin membranes that retain nanoscopic particles, including PFAS. 🔥 For waste: The #waste concentrated in PFAS is handled by specialized facilities. 🌡Reusing waste heat: when a solution for the automotive industry and residents benefits the environment! Veolia valorizes the fatal lost #heat generated by the industrial process of the Volkswagen Poznan plant in #Poland, by capturing it and then directly feeding it back into the city’s heating network. ⚡ This project prevents the emission of 3,500 t/year of CO₂ into the atmosphere. The energy transition has led to a skyrocketing need for strategic #metals such as copper, nickel, lithium, and cobalt, the extraction of which raises social and sovereignty issues. 📈 Critical metals can be endlessly #recycled while retaining their physical or chemical properties. Natural resources can be used to produce electricity like wind and sun but they are only intermittent sources as they depend on the weather. ➡️ Veolia has developed a solution to ensure electric grid stability: #electrical #flexibility. It is a decentralized service connected to industrial plants that analyzes their electrical profiles. 🏭 To avoid shutdowns or power outages, when demand for electricity is at its peak, signals are sent to sensors on production plants. Plants can temporarily reduce their use of electrical consumption. ➡️ Electrical flexibility helps to secure electricity supply and contributes to decarbonizing electricity production.
