Back to the Lake Lyrics

[Verse 1]
How can I look through
Their senseless side?
As much as I'd like to
All is not right, and it shows

All around you, under the tree
A seed, come in closer
There is a sign
Shaped in the mind

[Chorus]
Pick up
For God's sake
When we call you
Back to the lake

[Verse 2]
How can I tell you
All that is wrong?
Nothing invites you
Can't get along with you now

And I try to
There is a page
It's still unwritten, why can't you find
Time in your schedule
[Chorus]
To pick up?
For God's sake
When we call you
Back to the lake

[Chorus]
Oh, pick up
For God's sake
When we call you
Back to the lake

[Outro]
Make no mistake
We will call you
Back to the lake

About

Genius Annotation

The first of four 7" singles (Fading Captain Series #20) from Universal Truths and Cycles, all released on May 21, 2002. Its b-side was “Dig Through My Window”. It was later released as the album’s second commercial single in the UK in August 2002, with two b-sides.

The song was debuted live in October 2001, more than six months before the album’s release, and became a setlist staple through 2004, including a performance at GBV’s final show on New Year’s Eve. With Doug Gillard’s rejoining the band in 2016, the song was picked up again and has been played regularly since then.
