As part of our commitment to achieving a net zero future, we need to maximise on our vast potential of renewable energy resources. Project HYreland, marks the first project to action the joint declaration of intent signed between Ireland and Germany, and will be delivered alongside the German Government (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung) and the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications. The project will evaluate the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives in Ireland, and the potential transportation pathways to export any excess to Germany. The main body of work will be performed by Fraunhofer-Institut für Solare Energiesysteme ISE, a globally recognised research institute alongside the IERC - International Energy Research Centre, and selected associated industrial partners duisport - Duisburger Hafen AG, Wirtschaftsförderung Landkreis Stade GmbH, Hansestadt Stade and CCI Stade for the Elbe-Weser-Region. Today Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD has today announced 14 research awards which will receive funding through SFI’s Public Service Fellowship programme. One of the recipients of these awards was IERC's Dr. Subhash Kumar https://lnkd.in/drUYDzr8 It is anticipated that large-scale geothermal developments, including geothermal district heating projects, will commence in Ireland in the near-term. Subhash’s Fellowship will support the development of a clear planning framework for geothermal energy projects, particularly those that involve deep drilling (more than 500 m), and particularly in relation to environmental protection directives and policy. This work will define current requirements and identify any gaps for future policy development. The research will also support identification of priority candidate areas for district heating roll-out on a case-by-case basis and assess the existing planning landscape for a potential geothermal energy heat source.
