#ClimateAction Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA) and SIDBI(Small Industries Development Bank of India)'s ongoing pilot that was launched last year, made electric two and three wheelers accessible to women in rural India. The purchase of these vehicles were made possible through zero-interest loans and subsidies, making space for an inclusive and equitable clean-mobility transition. Simon M. 𝙀𝙢𝙥𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙍𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙨: 𝙎𝙀𝙒𝘼'𝙨 𝙀-𝙈𝙤𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙄𝙣𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙁𝙪𝙚𝙡𝙨 𝙒𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙣'𝙨 𝙄𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙥𝙚𝙣𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚!! #SEWA’s #BuildingCleanerSkies campaign not only focuses on enhancing awareness and education of rural communities on climate change and its adverse impacts on their lives and livelihoods but also tries to find, pilot and scale implementation of green energy solutions to reduce their dependence on fossil-fuels and build their #climateresilience while reducing their carbon footprint. One such solution is the E-Mobility initiative that aims to address the rural mobility challenges faced by rural women in scattered Indian villages where commuting often consumes considerable time, money, and energy, especially impacting young women whose safety concerns decrease their workforce participation and mar their aspirations. Over the past decades, by leveraging labor-augmenting green technologies, SEWA has not only created new livelihood avenues but also facilitated access to essential information regarding trade, government schemes, and expert opinions. This shift is vital for reducing rural outmigration and increasing women's labor force participation. Adopting similar approach, through the said initiative, SEWA in collaboration with organizations like the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC), SEWA has enabled rural women to access electric scooters and e-rickshaws through zero-interest loans and subsidies. More than 50 young women across Gujarat and Rajasthan have now embraced these e-vehicles, transforming their lives and communities. Sangeetaben Rathod from Gujarat's Arvalli district exemplifies this transformation. "Since getting the e-scooter, my business has tripled. I now serve SEWA members in 20 villages, earning significantly more than before. My family once opposed my riding alone, now they're proud. This is true empowerment," she shares. Mubarak Navrang Sepai, who upgraded to an e-rickshaw, also notes substantial savings and expanded business capacity. "My fuel costs have dropped from Rs 2 per km to just 25 paise," says Mubarak. These women are not only thriving economically but are also reducing their carbon footprint, showcasing a sustainable model of empowerment and environmental responsibility. "Change never happened suddenly," they acknowledge, underscoring a gradual yet determined shift towards gender equity and sustainability. Join SEWA in supporting these pioneering women as they drive towards a cleaner, more empowered future. Together, they are setting a precedent for sustainable development and female empowerment in rural India. Read more: https://lnkd.in/dRpFsv2W

#RuralMobility #ClimateAction Last week Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Self Employed Women's Association (SEWA), SIDBI(Small Industries Development Bank of India), TVS Motor Company and AMU organized a workshop in Sagwara, Rajasthan with the aim of scaling e-mobility solutions to make clean and affordable transportation accessible for rural women. The workshop raised awareness amongst SEWA sisters about electric vehicles (EVs), showcased innovative financing models and concessional schemes for accessible EV ownership in interactive sessions. This was followed by live demonstrations and test rides with the vehicles. SEWA sisters who opted to procure a vehicle using the financial models and concessional schemes were handed over their newly purchased TVS Motor Company electric two-wheelers at the workshop as well. With rural India accounting for 55% of two-wheeler sales, transitioning to electric mobility can be a game-changer—reducing drudgery, enhancing safety, and unlocking new economic opportunities, especially for women.
