Rise Against Hunger India envisions a world where everyone has access to quality food and nutrition at all times.

About us

Rise Against Hunger India envisions a world without hunger. Our mission is to nourish lives, empower communities, respond to emergencies and build a movement of hunger action champions. While communities work toward a future in which they can thrive, vulnerable families and individuals around the globe still have basic, immediate needs. That’s why Rise Against Hunger India supports safety net programs that provide nourishment, as well as additional skills training or services that support the difficult journey out of poverty. Rise Against Hunger India meals are provided in schools to encourage increased enrollment and attendance. Meals distributed in hospitals and clinics supplement nutritional needs of patients recovering from TB, Cancer, HIV/AIDS and complement their treatments. For community empowerment programs, Rise Against Hunger India focuses on sustainable food security through community-based projects on climate smart agriculture, land and soil management, food production, storage and marketing, introduction of new technologies for small farmers. Rise Against Hunger India aims to increase agricultural production and incomes through programs promoting improved agricultural methods, business skills, and market access. We work with smallholder farmers to build resilience to the shocks and stresses of climate change by promoting ecological approaches to agriculture as well as diversification. Our recent SAMBAL Initiative aims to support rural households in hunger pockets in the country through farm and non-farm interventions. VOLUNTEER ENGAGEMENT No single agency or government can end hunger alone, and it will take everyone to make this a movement. Backed by a strong belief that anyone from anywhere, regardless of their age, gender, qualification can take action and make a positive difference in the fight against hunger, we have a range of volunteering initiatives that are open to all. Even seemingly small contributions can add up to a BIG impact.

  • This machine ⚙️ is helping farmers reclaim their livelihoods and strengthen their resilience in drought-prone Odisha’s Bargarh. Frequent droughts in Bargarh push farmers to migrate for livelihoods. But change is here 🌾. As part of its agriculture support initiative, Rise Against Hunger India provided a paddy de-husking and polisher machine to a farmers’ group of over 5000 members. This machine is transforming lives. Here’s how: ➡️ More Value, Less Labor: Farmers no longer rely on labor-intensive manual milling. With the machine, they efficiently separate polished rice, rice bran, and paddy husk. ➡️ Multi-Product Revenue: • Polished Rice 🍚: Consumed or sold in the market • Rice Bran 🐂: Used as livestock feed (₹40/kg) • Paddy Husk 🌾: Repurposed as animal bedding (₹3/kg) ➡️ Boosting Income: Farmers charge ₹50 per quintal for milling, generating a gross revenue of ₹7.5 lakh since its installation in 2022. Together, let’s build a sustainable future. 🌾 #FarmerEmpowerment #SustainableAgriculture #DroughtRelief

  • What happens when youth are empowered with the tools to lead healthier lives? Change begins! We recently conducted an inspiring Training of Trainers (ToT) session on the Nutrition-Focused Life Skills Module at Bastar Sewak Mandal, Jagdalpur, for the Odisha team. A vibrant group of 21 Peer Educators and 16 staff members participated, brimming with enthusiasm! 💡 Here’s what we accomplished together: ✔️ Explored the fundamentals of Food and Nutrition—the building blocks of health and well-being. ✔️ Started a journey into Effective Communication—because spreading knowledge amplifies impact. Why this module is a game-changer: 🍎 It empowers youth with actionable knowledge about nutrition and healthy habits. 🧠 Integrates life skills like critical thinking and decision-making to foster independence. 💪 Tackles malnutrition and food insecurity while building immunity and resilience. 📢 Why it matters now more than ever: Today’s youth face a complex food environment—from malnutrition to obesity. This module bridges the gap between knowledge and practice, empowering adolescents to make sustainable health choices that uplift themselves and their communities. Together, we’re planting seeds for a healthier, brighter India—one skill at a time. 👉 Ready to make a difference? Let’s join hands to create a movement that transforms lives. #YouthEmpowerment #NutritionMatters #LifeSkills

  • What if forests 🌳 could fuel brighter futures? In Khairput block, Odisha, Rise Against Hunger India is enabling the Bonda tribe—one of India’s particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs)—unlock the true potential of non-timber forest products (NTFPs) 🌿. In a recent two-day training in Mudulipada village, 31 participants, including leaders from 9 villages 🏘️, learned how to clean, sort, grade, and store NTFPs. These skills empower them to get better prices 💰 for their produce and reduce exploitation by intermediaries. For the Bondas, NTFPs mean more than income: ➡️they’re food 🍎 ➡️ medicine 💊 ➡️ and a path to sustainable livelihoods 🌱 With better market linkages, value addition, and fair transportation, we’re helping tribal families secure what they deserve. Let’s create a future where nature supports not just life but livelihoods 🌏. Join us! 🌳 #TribalEmpowerment #SustainableLivelihoods #ForestToFuture

  • 🥗 Is your thali up to date with ICMR’s new dietary rules? ICMR, India’s apex health research body, has dropped a fresh set of dietary rules after 14 years. Here’s the gist to help you decide if your thali needs a makeover: ✅ Eat more veggies, fruits, and whole grains (50% of daily intake). ✅ Limit cereals to 45% of daily energy intake. ✅ Increase pulses, meat, poultry, and fish to 15%. ✅ Keep total fat intake below 30%. ✅ Get essential fatty acids from nuts, oilseeds, milk products, and seafood. ❌ Avoid ultra-processed foods like chips. ❌ Ditch artificial protein powders. And those favourite fried snacks? Better save them for occasional treats. The focus is simple: balance, variety, and nutrients. It’s time to rethink what fuels us. 🥗 What’s on your plate today? 🥄 Share your thoughts or a photo of your plate below! 👇 For detailed dietary guidelines, check the link in the comments. #ICMR #DietaryGuidelines #HealthyEating

  • 🌱 What’s beneath our feet is the foundation of life. Today, on World Soil Day, let’s pause to honor that sustains us all—soil. Did you know? ➡️ 95% of our food comes from the soil. ➡️Healthy soil stores more carbon than all the world's forests combined. ➡️Yet, 33% of soil globally is degraded due to erosion, pollution, and overuse. Healthy soil means healthy food, clean water, and a stable climate. But it's disappearing at an alarming rate. Let's take action: ➡️Support sustainable farming. ➡️Reduce waste. ➡️Advocate for soil conservation policies. At Rise Against Hunger India, we are taking a stand. We empower farmers with cost-effective, soil-friendly, and productive agrarian practices, transforming agriculture into a sustainable and profitable venture. #WorldSoilDay #SaveOurSoil #Sustainability

  • 🗑️Trash bins are full, but stomachs are empty. Welcome to the harsh reality of Food Waste 🍽️. A staggering 1.05 billion tonnes of food went to waste in 2022. Meanwhile, 783 million people faced hunger, and 1 in 3 experienced food insecurity. The UNEP Food Waste Index Report 2024 sheds light on this global crisis: ➡️The Scale: 132 kg of food wasted per person annually, with households responsible for 60% of the total. ➡️Climate Impact: Food waste accounts for 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions—5x that of aviation! ➡️ Economic Cost: A USD 1 trillion toll on the global economy. ➡️ Global Inequality: Food waste isn’t just a “rich country” problem; disparities exist across income levels. ➡️ Solutions Needed: Stronger tracking, national policies, and public-private partnerships can reverse trends. It’s time to prioritize food waste reduction. Not just for our planet, but for humanity's future. 👉 Read the full UNEP report to learn more (Link in the comments). #FoodWaste #ZeroHunger #ClimateAction
