On the invitation of the President of the European Investment Bank (EIB) earlier this afternoon I was honoured to attend an event which celebrated the opening of the EIB office in Malta. The office is led by Mr Lawrence Martin C. Walsh whom we warmly welcome to Malta. The President of the EIB, Ms Nadia Calviño, and Hon. Clyde Caruana, Minister for Finance, addressed the floor and unveiled a commemorative plaque marking this historic event. Ms Calviño expressed interest in the work that we are doing at PEVCA Malta and outlined the priorities that they see for Malta which are congruent with the objectives of the Association. I am also happy that the EIB will support social impact initiatives, in particular affordable housing, and this was also reiterated by Minister Caruana in his speech. Definitely good news for the local private equity scene as Melita Ltd. announced that Goldman Sachs Asset Management has signed an agreement to acquire Melita Limited from EQT Infrastructure IV fund. 🇷🇼 Yesterday evening I had the pleasure of meeting Ms Hortense Mudenge, Chief Strategy Officer at Rwanda Finance Limited, and Mr Jean Paul TUMUSIFU, KIFC Club Associate at the Kigali International Financial Centre in Rwanda, in a courtesy visit we paid them. I congratulate Rwanda for the work they are doing. We discussed and touched upon both investment opportunities in Rwanda and the region, leveraging Rwanda’s position in East Africa. We also touched upon a greater collaboration between Malta and Rwanda at our level in financial services and other sectors, consolidating the relationship between both countries for mutual benefit. This was my second trip to the beautiful country of a thousand hills, the previous trip related to the second meeting of the Africa Sovereign Investors Forum that was organised by Rwanda’s Agaciro Development Fund between 6-7 July 2023. 📢 On Tuesday, 24 October 2024, PEVCA Malta members had the opportunity to engage in an insightful conversation with the veteran private equity fund manager, Mr. Gavin Ryan. The event took place at the Casino Maltese and provided a valuable platform for exchanging ideas, asking questions, and discussing strategies for further developing Malta's private equity industry. The session was led by Mr. George Vella, Chairman of FinanceMalta, which collaborated with PEVCA Malta to organise this event aimed at attracting investments both within and beyond Malta. Mr. Ryan brings over twenty years of experience in private equity fund management. He has managed several notable funds, including a $30 million Advent International Affiliate Fund, a $200 million fund as part of Soros Fund Management, and a €2.5 billion Green Energy Asset Manager. Prior to his career in private equity, Mr. Ryan worked in investment banking at HSBC and Nomura. He holds an engineering degree from Cambridge and an MBA from McGill University. During the session, Mr. Ryan shared his extensive experience in the industry as a mentor, advisor, and leader in educational programmes. He emphasised the importance of having the right financial instruments and setups, understanding the economic cycle of investment, and adapting the European investment model to differentiate it in emerging markets.
