Yet another nomination - Future Proof Technologies 🎉🌱 More excited news to share right before christmas! We're thrilled to share that our contributor, Valto biocontrol has been nominated for the Horticulture Entrepreneurship Award in the theme price 'Future Proof Technologies'. It’s incredible to see such impactful innovation within our network! Valto is making a significant impact in the world of biological crop protection, addressing the increasing challenges of disease pressures and viruses. One such threat is the Pepino mosaic virus (PepMV), a highly contagious and adaptable virus affecting high-tech tomato production, where it damages fruits and the plant itself. After years of dedicated research, Valta has developed a natural crop protection solution to combat this virus—with success! Their innovation is a vital step forward in safeguarding our crops and promoting sustainable food production. 💡🍅 Congratulations to team Valto biocontrol on this well-deserved recognition! #biological #crop #protection #tomatoes #hightech #horticulture #innovation #futureproof #eatmoreveggies

🎄✨The holidays are a time to indulge, but did you know that millions of kilos of food go to waste worldwide every Christmas? You could opt for just a liquid dinner—cheers to that! 🍸 But with a little mindfulness, we can all celebrate more sustainably, without giving up the joy of the season. Here are some tips for a merrier, more sustainable Christmas dinner: 🌱 Rethink the menu: Highlight plant-based dishes with seasonal veggies like parsnips, red cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. A nut roast or veggie lasagna is a delicious, planet-friendly alternative. 🍽️ Plan your portions: Avoid overbuying by calculating how much you’ll need. Turn leftovers into tasty dishes like curries, soups, or casseroles. 🛒 Shop consciously: Support local growers and opt for loose veggies over pre-packaged ones to cut down on plastic waste. ❄️ Freeze wisely: Extend the life of ingredients and dishes by freezing them. This season, let’s toast to good food, great company, and a little extra love for the planet! 💚✨ #SustainableChristmas #LessWasteMoreTaste #FutureofFood #MindfulFood #MindfulChristmas #SustainableFood #EatThis

💫 Before we take a bite out of 2025, let's savor the highlights of a dynamic and inspiring 2024. This year, we deepened connections, drove innovation, and celebrated the transformative power of horticulture. Here’s what we accomplished: 🌿 Partnering with Caring Doctors We advanced plant-based nutrition in healthcare through residencies, events, and initiatives like the Caring Dinners and a podcast at Hortibiz News & Media, laying the groundwork for sustainable food systems in Dutch hospitals. 📸 Showcasing "Food for Thought" Our collaboration with Kadir Van Lohuizen brought the vital role of horticulture in global food systems to life through exhibitions, debates, and international media, reaching millions and sparking meaningful dialogue. 🌱 Driving Innovation with Hungry EcoCities This EU-funded program by STARTS connects entrepreneurs, artists, and horticulture leaders to envision solutions for sustainable urban food systems, with events that placed horticulture at the forefront of urban sustainability discussions. 🫶 Fostering Collaboration through Unconferences From amplifying network synergies in February to exploring horticulture’s role in healthcare in November, these gatherings cultivated impactful connections across sectors. 🤝 Building New Partnerships We joined forces with organizations like the World Horti Center, Slow Food Youth Network (SFYN) Nederland, and WUR Student Challenges to amplify horticulture’s role in health and sustainability. 🎨 Inspiring Residencies We hosted residencies that bridged horticulture with art, health, and innovation, creating podcasts, exhibitions, and new perspectives. Upcoming residencies in 2025 will continue this creative momentum. Looking ahead, 2025 promises more exciting collaborations, from new residencies to the unveiling of Hungry EcoCities prototypes at GreenTech and plant-based healthcare programs at the World Horti Center Health Square. Living Life on the Veg: 🫛 Resilience Food Stories beautifully tells the inspiring journey of Guy Singh Watson, a twice-crowned BBC Farmer of the Year. Guy turned his farm, Riverford Organic Farmers, into a powerhouse delivering 50,000 veg boxes weekly to homes across the UK. Last year, Riverford reached a turnover of £100 million. Guy’s approach to farming and business is deeply ethical and authentic. In 2018, he sold 74% of Riverford to his employees at a fraction of its market value, and by 2023, the farm became 100% employee-owned. His vision? A kinder, fairer way to connect food, farming, and people 🌾💚 ✨ For the full story and video, head over to https://lnkd.in/eHP4iP4a #resiliencefoodstories #futureoffood #howtofeedtheworld #futureoffarming #farmerofthefuture #howtofeedtheworld2050 #eatthis #sustainablefoodsystems

Last Friday the Eatthis. Unconference (the last one of this year!) concentrated on taking the cooperation with Caring Doctors one step further. Following their In Residency program in August, it was now time to brainstorm on how to implement the planetary health diet in hospitals. The horticultural sector’s output, fresh vegetables, is exactly what is needed to battle against diabetes, obesity and cancer. In short, eat more vegetables. The Caring Doctors go for the EAT Lancet diet, a science based diet that concentrates on eating more vegetables (80%) and less animal products (20%). During our meeting a positive vibe was felt and all participants were very much willing to not only talk about solving problems, but also came up with useful ideas. Producers of fresh, healthy vegetables deserve to be more visible when working together with doctors to solve the pressing issues our health care system (and not only in the Netherlands, but worldwide) has to deal with. Stay tuned for more follow up and activities in the coming weeks and months!
