🚨 New EEA Report: Tackling Chronic Respiratory Disease in Europe through Environmental Policy 🚨 The latest European Environment Agency (EEA) report sheds light on the crucial link between environmental risk factors and chronic respiratory diseases (CRD) in Europe, revealing that these factors contribute to almost 80,000 early deaths annually. This alarming figure underscores the urgent need for strong, preventative policies to reduce the burden of chronic respiratory disease. Key findings from the report: 🌿 Air pollution accounts for 14% of CRD-related deaths 🌡️ Extreme temperatures (cold & heat) contribute 11% 💼 Occupational exposure (dust, chemicals, extreme temperatures) leads to 8% 🚬 Second-hand smoke is responsible for 3% What’s clear from the report is that many of these environmental risk factors are inherently preventable, but individuals alone cannot fully protect themselves. That's why robust policies, full implementation, and adequate financing at all levels are essential. 🔑 Key interventions that could significantly reduce CRD include: Improving air quality Addressing energy poverty Adapting to climate change Enforcing tobacco regulations and reducing occupational risks These measures, combined, could prevent a large share of premature deaths from CRD linked to environmental factors in Europe. As the report emphasizes, chronic respiratory diseases tend to reflect past exposure, so it may take years for reduced exposure to lead to lower disease rates. However, the time to act is now! Read the full report and join the conversation on how we can collectively beat chronic respiratory disease in Europe! Very interesting European Environment Agency report on the impact of environmental factors on chronic respiratory diseases, one of the leading causes of death in Europe (more than a third of these deaths are estimated to be caused by environmental factors that are preventable, according to the report). As the European Environment Agency (EEA) states in this document, key interventions include reducing pollution, energy poverty, and occupational exposures. 📜 🌏 Call for papers related to Planetary Health and One Health in the journal BioScience! 📆 Deadline for the special issue: 1 December 2024! "Global communities and ecosystems face significant challenges that are complex and multidimensional, with adverse effects on living organisms and global ecosystems. The One Health concept initially focused on transmission of disease from wildlife to humans. More recently, One Health describes a broader perspective encompassing human, wildlife, and ecosystem interrelationships, and the factors that drive outcomes. The One Health Framework can provide a structure approach to develop interventions and actions. Planetary Health, Ecohealth, and Global Health perspectives provide important insights into areas of overlap, methodologies, restoration, and knowledge base. Interventions to reverse the demise of global ecosystems utilize restoration ecology, community education, ecotoxicology, and multiple disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, economics, conservation, biodiversity, and health. BioScience is planning to publish a special issue on One Health and invites articles addressing human, wildlife, domestic animal, and ecosystem health. Topics pertinent to One Health are extremely broad, including, for example, disease transmission, wildlife and human health, anthropogenic effects, One Environmental Health, societal drivers, ecosystem restoration, ecotoxicology, and other subject areas mentioned above. As such, this special issue is intended to encompass multiple aspects and perspectives on the very broad topic of One Heath." Link here: https://lnkd.in/eZSHxdMb

Health is THE argument for climate action. Top recommendations: Make human health and well-being the top measure of climate success to catalyse progress and ensure people-centred adaptation and resilience; End fossil fuel subsidies and reliance by realigning economic and financial systems to protect both people's health and the environment, through investment in clean, sustainable alternatives that reduce pollution-related diseases and cut carbon emissions; Mobilize financing for climate-health initiatives, particularly to strengthen responsive health systems and support the health workforce, creating resilient, climate-proof health systems to protect health and save lives; Invest in proven solutions; just 5 interventions – from heat-health warning systems, to clean household energy, to efficient pricing of fossil fuels – would save almost 2 million lives a year, and bring US$ 4 in benefits for each dollar invested; Build greater focus on the role of cities in health outcomes, through more sustainable urban design, clean energy, resilient housing, and improved sanitation; Increase protections for and restoration of nature and biodiversity, recognizing the synergistic health benefits of clean air, water and food security. https://lnkd.in/dDDDrwhu
