Congratulations to the QAIMS lab team for winning the Golden App prize in the Airbus & BMW Group Quantum Computing Challenge! 🚀 Team leader Boyang Chen accepted the award on behalf of the team in Silicon Valley today. The team: 👏🏼 Arne Wulff, Swapan Madabhushi, Boyang Chen, and Yinglu Tang from the Faculty of TU Delft | Aerospace Engineering 👏🏼 Matthias Möller from the Faculty of TU Delft | Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science 👏🏼 Sebastian Feld from QuTech Arne: “We’re grateful and proud! It’s a fantastic recognition of the potential of applying quantum computing to the design of composite materials.” Boyang: “In two years of research we have come up with a brand new methodology that we’ve demonstrated to be highly competitive at the industrial scale, and with marketable software that companies could start using today to make better lightweight composite materials.” A huge thank you to Airbus, BMW, AWS, The Quantum Insider and the entire challenge team for making this possible! 🚀 Read the news item👉🏻https://lnkd.in/exH7jxTS #aetudelft #tudelft #aerospaceengineering #award #peopleofAE #quantumcomputing #stackingsequence

We're pleased and excited to announce that two Luchtvaart in Transitie subprojects - DASAL and Flying Vision Accelerator - have been given the go-ahead! Through roadmaps and model-based simulations and scenarios, the projects will pool the necessary knowledge for a solid and underpinned foundation for making aviation more sustainable. Flying Vision Accelerator is being led by TU Delft with partners NLR - Netherlands Aerospace Centre, Royal Schiphol Group, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Airbus. The project leadership of DASAL lies with NLR with TU Delft as partner. The grants for both subprojects have been agreed by the Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat and they can now really start. ‘Luchtvaart in Transitie’ is a programme of the Dutch National Growth Fund and European Union Next Generation EU. Three #aetudelft researchers were featured on CNN where they shared their research in ‘CNN’s Tech for Good’ video 🎥🚀 ➡Tom van Dijk developed an autonomous drone that can navigate back to its starting point, inspired by the way ants and other insects—despite their tiny brains—find their way. ➡Chaoxiang Ye and Salua Hamaza created whisker-inspired sensors based on the way rabbits and mice navigate in the dark using their whiskers. These sensors enable drones to fly in complete darkness. Watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/ediEA84b #tudelft #university #aerospaceengineering #drones #CNN #tech #media #peopleofAE

TU Delft’s student team Da Vinci Satellite (DVS) has reached a significant milestone by signing a contract with the European Space Agency (ESA) for their upcoming CubeSat mission 💫🚀 As part of this agreement, DVS is now officially included in ESA’s ‘Fly Your Satellite!’ program. This collaboration propels the teams ambitious project to design, build, launch and operate a #nanosatellite that directly connects primary and secondary school children with #space. “Securing a contract with ESA shows that our project has reached a level of maturity and credibility that few student teams achieve. With ESA supporting our mission, we now have a clear path toward the launch.” Visit our website to read more about their mission 🙌🏻 #aetudelft #tudelft #aerospaceengineering #Delft #university #studentlife #studentsofAE #peopleofAE

🌳🌱 Trees are excellent teachers when it comes to making materials for load-bearing structures with as little resources and energy as possible. One of their secrets? When a tree grows, the direction of the wood grain adapts itself to fit the load that part of the tree is going to bear. In other words, it can choose how much anisotropy it needs. PhD candidate Aerospace Structures and Materials, Caroline Houriet, studied different approaches to apply this smart way of utilizing anisotropy, to human-made Liquid Crystal Polymers. 3D-printing allowed her to shape the material into any tool or part and to control the orientation of the molecules during manufacturing. Her purpose: make the most of limited resources by learning from nature. Caroline defended her PhD thesis on 11 November 2024, cum laude. Today NLR - Netherlands Aerospace Centre and TU Delft | Aerospace Engineering welcome to ‘TU Delft | Campus The Hague’ a broad delegation of senior policymakers from Ministry of Economic Affairs, Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat and Ministerie van Defensie for the masterclass ‘Green Growth in Dutch Aviation.’ In five briefings, we will update them on the latest scientific knowledge on climate and local impacts of aviation and on solutions in aircraft design, loading and fuelling infrastructure and aviation fuels and energy carriers. The afternoon is all about systems thinking. Great that we can think along in this way and contribute to achieving climate-neutral aviation in 2050 - or sooner! #aetudelft #tudelft #climateneutralaviation #innovation #knowledge #masterclass #sustainableaviation

TU Delft drone team awarded in XPRIZE Rainforest competition in Brazil 🏆🌎🌱 On November 15, 2024, after five years of intensive work, the #ETHBiodivX team, which includes #aetudelft researcher Salua Hamaza and Georg Strunck, won the XPRIZE Rainforest Bonus Prize in the worldwide #XPRIZERainforest competition. Their innovative technology uses semi-autonomous drones to deploy a network of canopy rafts equipped with advanced sensors to monitor ecosystems in real time. Despite challenges, including tropical thunderstorms during the finals in Brazil, the team successfully deployed their technology, capturing invaluable biodiversity data. This victory sets the stage for more inclusive and sustainable conservation efforts worldwide. Salua Hamaza: “We’re thrilled the team’s hard work paid off. It started off as a far hope -- competing against 300 teams -- then advancing to the finals with just five other teams and ultimately securing a prize for our outstanding efforts. These results achieved in the XPRIZE represent a significant milestone for conservation technology in the Amazon, and beyond”. Read more👉🏻https://lnkd.in/eCQrkCdV #tudelft #drones #impact #award
