🎄 December Event Recap & Holiday Greetings 🎄 As we close out 2024, we're reflecting on a fantastic December event hosted by the Trondheim section of SPE at the Radisson Blu Royal Garden Hotel. It was an evening of knowledge-sharing and networking with in total about 20 professionals, including students, from the energy sector. We were fortunate to have Dr. Muhammad Arsalan, Sensing, Robotics, & Multiphase Metering R&D Specialist and SPE Distinguished Lecturer. Muhammad shared his insights on "New Frontiers in Intelligent Completions," offering an in-depth look at cutting-edge technology and its potential to revolutionize operations in oil and gas industry. His presentation sparked vibrant discussions around the future of completion technologies. Dmitri Gorski, CEO of Nicoustic and Heavelock Solutions, took the stage with a thought-provoking presentation on "Non-Intrusive Acoustic Level Measurement in Separator Vessels - First Offshore Pilot." Dmitri highlighted the innovative use of non-intrusive acoustic technology for monitoring in separator vessels, with insights drawn from their pioneering offshore pilot project. This was a great example of how technological advancements continue to push the boundaries of technological advancements in our industry. As we wrap up 2024, we want to thank everyone for their collaboration and participation in our events throughout the year. Dr. Muhammad Arsalan is a seasoned professional with over 25 years of experience in academia and various industries including energy, space, semiconductors, biomedical, and chemicals. He has over 100 international patents and publications related to advanced sensors, systems, and tools. He is the recipient of 2022 SPE Completions Award for MENA region and multiple national and international awards and distinctions for his entrepreneurial skills and groundbreaking contributions in research and innovation. He is leading a team of experts in multiphase metering, advanced sensing, and robotics at Saudi Aramco's Advanced Research Center. His team is working on innovative surface and subsurface production monitoring, control, and optimization technologies. Abstract: Managing uncertainties in reservoirs, particularly in carbonate rocks, is a major challenge. Intelligent completions give the ability to monitor and control specific zones within wells. Without this control, the well may be lost when a zone unpredictably waters out and require mechanical intervention with its associated risks and costs. Most of the existing intelligent completions are limited to the newly drilled wells or cased holes. The challenge is to economically convert exiting open-hole horizontal wells into smart wells to achieve real-time monitoring and control for optimal recovery, enhanced production, and maximum operational efficiency. A large number of wells are completed at open-holes with no casing, tubing or umbilical available for power and communication. With the aging of these oil wells, unwanted gas and water break-thru are commonly reported issues. With most of these wells in horizontal open-hole configuration, this leads to a work over, or in extreme cases, abandoning or sidetracking of the wells. These solutions are expensive and require a rig to perform the job. A rig is an expensive and scarce commodity that results in long wait times and lost production. To resolve these issues, the revolutionary Thru-tubing Retrievable Intelligent Completion System (TRICS) is conceptualized that is based on thru-tubing access for both initial completion and future modifications and replacements of existing, as well as, newly drilled wells. Award-winning TRICS is a rig-less deployed, on-demand, modular, real-time, monitoring and control solution targeted for open-hole horizontal wells. Unlike commercially available solutions, TRICS is a "free-form" platform that can be deployed ‘only’ when needed. TRICS consists of game-changing technologies that will revolutionize production engineering and reservoir management.

He has spent around 15 years working with brownfield and greenfield projects for Statoil/Equinor as well as with technology development and commercialization for small companies and start-ups. Today, he holds CEO positions in Heavelock Solutions and Nicoustic. The latter is a spin-off from Equinor and Fraunhofer IKTS set to develop non-intrusive level measurement in process tanks.   Abstract of the presentation: Accurate measurement of liquids and solids level in process vessels such as oil and gas separators is important for safety, production optimization as well as for minimizing CO2 emissions and dosage of chemical additives. Non-intrusive measurement of level offers opportunities to significantly decrease installation and maintenance costs as well as to increase personnel safety and instrument reliability.   Non-intrusive level measurement is a good fit for Greenfield projects, and it is great in Brownfield context. Mature fields often have increasing challenges with solids and emulsions, something they are seldom equipped to measure. Retrofitting intrusive level measurement equipment on a producing asset is prohibitively expensive; production needs to be stopped for at least a week and the project becomes part of turnaround scope. Technologies widely used for level measurement in process equipment today are intrusive.   Behind Nicoustic is many years of advanced research in Guided Ultrasonic Waves at Fraunhofer IKTS (Dresden) combined with determination of Equinor to improve level measurement on its assets. The first field trial of Nicoustic non-intrusive level sensors has started on Snorre A in April this year. In parallel with that, a Joint Industry Project (JIP) aimed at further advancing this technology has been initialized with broad support from 6 Norwegian and International operator companies.   This presentation will describe the development effort behind the technology, the first results of its piloting and the implications it has for cost and emission reductions on existing and future assets.
