"The expectations and hopes of millions and billions of people are actually depending on this COP. Failure is really not a choice," says Amina Maharjan, Senior Livelihood and Migration Specialist, ICIMOD, who was in Baku for week two of the annual climate change conference. "The hope of having a future for the people is really hanging in the balance." Earth Negotiations Bulletin (ENB) described the establishment of a new collective quantified goal (NCQG) on climate finance as “a milestone agreement that will inform climate action for years to come." The pledge, of $300bn in finance a year to fund developing countries' transition and help communities adapt, fell far short of the $1.3 trillion these countries are estimated to need annually. But some were quick to call the sum "a floor not a ceiling." Maharjan was among the ICIMOD experts in negotiations, advocacy, and science who were on the ground in Baku for the full two weeks of this year's climate change summit, monitoring key developments, forging new and strengthening existing alliances, and supporting negotiators from our Regional Member Countries to ensure their priorities were heard. INTRODUCING HKH WOMEN ON ICE: BREAKING THROUGH SCIENCE’S ICE CEILING The climate emergency is an all-hands-on-deck moment. To power change on the scale the world needs will take all of humanity’s knowledge, skills, and talents. But even in a world where gender inequality remains the norm, science continues to lag behind—with just one-third of researchers being women. The number of women in cryosphere science—the study of snow, ice, and permafrost—is even smaller, and smaller still in the Hindu Kush Himalaya, where gender inequalities remain particularly entrenched. We’re setting out to change that: building the next generation of female cryosphere researchers with our first WOMEN ON ICE expedition. Starting this Wednesday, nine women drawn from Bhutan, China, India, Pakistan, Nepal will travel to Pongkar Glacier in Nepal’s Manaslu region. They will be mentored by leading female researchers from ICIMOD and beyond, including IPCC author Miriam Jackson, cryosphere analyst Finu Shrestha, and young glaciologist Sunwi Maskey: 🔹Gaining the skills and confidence to thrive in a field where women’s perspectives are seriously underrepresented. 🔹Challenging preconceptions about where women do and don’t belong. Meet our first cohort of #WomenOnIce: 🔹Aishwarya Sanas, India 🔹Silian Pan, China 🔹Mamata Aryal, Nepal 🔹Pema Eden, Bhutan 🔹Farhana Altaf, Pakistan 🔹Yinglan Jia, China 🔹Tuba Farooq, Pakistan 🔹Jeena Rai, Bhutan 🔹Yurika S., Nepal Stay tuned for updates from the expedition: https://lnkd.in/gEWBYmGh #Cryosphere #IYGP #Glaciers #SaveOurSnow Chimi Seldon Iram Bano Dorothea Stumm Neera Shrestha Pradhan, PhD Arun Bhakta Shrestha Sonam Wangchuk, Ph.D.

A tale of two brothers revolutionising farming in Karnali: building sustainability, climate resilience and pride In the serene village of Sadhikhola in Surkhet district, two brothers, Chandra Bahadur GC and Tek Bahadur Gharti, are rewriting the narratives of farming in Karnali province, mid-western Nepal. Originally from Surkhet, they travelled to India where they were migrant workers for many years. Their journey from labourers in India to pioneering organic farmers in Nepal epitomises resilience, innovation, and a profound commitment to their homeland: https://lnkd.in/gi5PCUmg Supported by ICIMOD’s Green Resilient Agriculture Productive Ecosystems (GRAPE) project and now Himalayan Resilience Enabling Action Programme (Hi-REAP), their efforts align with Karnali's vision for regenerative agriculture.
