  • 🎉🚢 Congratulations to LPC for the release of their first nature-related disclosures report – we're proud to have supported them to become the first company in Aotearoa New Zealand to apply the Taskforce for Nature-Related Financial Disclosure's (TNFD) recommendations!   It has been Nature Positive’s absolute pleasure to support the LPC team – including Graeme Sumner, Phil de Joux, Crystal Lenky, Kirsty Brennan and Charlotte Jones– in the preparation of this nature disclosure by providing advice, technical review and facilitating workshops.   We have been impressed by the courageous leadership shown across levels in LPC and their well-informed commitment to authenticity. We have already observed a governance response to learnings from the TNFD process. We applaud their plans to collaboratively develop the Biodiversity Positive Roadmap with Whakaraupō-Lyttelton catchment partners to transform LPC’s relationship with nature.   A well-prepared TNFD disclosure requires an honest reflection on a company’s relationship with nature & climate, providing valuable guidance on focal areas to improve the state of nature for the community, biodiversity and business resilience.

Lyttelton Port Company is proud to announce the release of the first Nature-related Disclosures Report for any business in New Zealand. Our nature-disclosures report, published this week, marks our first attempt to quantify our impacts and dependencies on nature. LPC has a biodiversity positive ambition, with the goal to ensure positive actions for nature outweigh negative impacts. This report provides a foundation for understanding where we need to focus to avoid further loss of nature and work towards improving the state of nature. Our next steps include developing a Biodiversity Positive Roadmap and collaborating with catchment partners to transform our relationship with nature. ☁️ 👉 What is your business' relationship with nature? We aimed to answer this at our workshop on 'Redefining your Relationship with Nature', at the Sustainable Business Network Nature and Business symposium. 🍃 With countless nature disclosure and reporting frameworks out there, we wanted to simplify and focus on the basic principles that can be applied to all types and sizes of business: 🐢 Understanding who and what is driving your nature ambition 📈 Distilling what ambition your organisation could commit to – Deciding on ambition levels and timelines 📋 Crafting a solid nature strategy aligning all linked sustainability themes 🎯 Prioritising where nature actions count most in your value chain We had some fun and the engagement was incredible with a real buzz of energy and enthusiasm in the room. Thanks to everyone who joined us, and thanks to SBN for convening, coordinating and capturing the pics! 📸

  • 🌟 Insights from ‘SBTN Unpacked’ Following last week’s Science Based Targets for Nature Unpacked event, we wanted to share some key takeaways that really stood out for us: 🔹 SBTN can help frame the nature target setting already happening here🔹 Quite a few participant companies have already set nature targets in some form and more are in the process – there is definitely momentum for business nature targets in Aotearoa New Zealand. Although guidance and validation processes are in progress, the SBTN framework already provides a welcome opportunity to set target boundaries, ambition levels and timelines in line with global best practice. 🔹 Community and export market expectations are the biggest drivers for NZ companies 🔹 Our straw poll (pictured) in the room showed that the biggest motivator to set nature targets is to drive collaborations with communities where material business impacts or dependencies exist in the value chain. Our discussions in the room indicated that meeting our international export markets' requirements is an increasingly important and urgent driver. 🔹 Place-connected values & Te ao Māori 🔹 The fundamental importance of localising global frameworks with place-based values and nature recovery thresholds was a consistent emphasis. Incorporation of mātauranga Māori and perspectives was agreed to be an essential starting point in the Aotearoa elements of value chains. 🔹 Unique position in NZ to get started 🔹 Te ao Māori naturally aligns with SBTN's foundational concept of living within planetary boundaries. We also have a rich knowledge base of ecological baselines and thresholds. New Zealand is in an ideal position to get started on SBTN, Thanks to RMA requirements, mātauranga Māori, and our strong natural sciences research tradition. 🔹 SBTN complements TNFD 🔹 SBTN & TNFD can be implemented in parallel and there is a lot of complementarity in the work required for the assessment of materiality steps in each. Whereas TNFD focuses on how nature affects the business, SBTN focuses on how business affects nature. SBTN goes beyond TNFD's disclosure recommendations to provide a framework for setting targets, taking action and tracking outcomes.    ~ We’re excited to see how these insights will shape the future of SBTN within Aotearoa. • ⚡️ A full house of over 100 people, lots of energy and a drive for action ⚡️ Last week, we had the pleasure of unpacking how the Science-Based Targets for Nature guidance can be applied in the Aotearoa New Zealand context, in collaboration with the Sustainable Business Council NZ. 🌏 With the current global momentum for business to set ambitious nature targets, our goal was to explain SBTN in the context of other reporting frameworks and the broader nature positive movement, plus, deciding whether it has value for you and how to get started. 🏟️ And with a full house, it's clear that there is a strong interest and genuine motivation to make nature part of the core business. 🧩 "Complex" stood out on the word cloud when it came to our thoughts on implementing the Science Based Targets for Nature framework. We gave a simplified overview and explored how Science-Based Targets for Nature (SBTN) can be effectively applied to NZ businesses. The future is exciting: there's a definite momentum to setting targets in Aotearoa. 👉 We’re also leading an ongoing working group focused on SBTN. • 🌿 We were privileged to partner with Sustainable Business Network to help with the design and delivery of the Nature and Business symposium, which happened last week. It was a fantastic event with a unique diversity of players - bringing together people from big and small businesses, NGOs and more. 🧶 The golden thread was the crucial role that nature plays in business success and how business can support regenerative action for a thriving nature. On the day we were involved in a few events: 💬 Hosting a panel discussion on "Integrity, communication and governance principles of nature action", with Lucy A. F Bennetto from Bennetto Natural Foods co, Kirsty Brennan from Lyttelton Port Company, Dave Maslen from The New Zealand Merino Company and Chris Morrison from Karma Drinks and All Good. 🤓 Being a part of the 'Ask the Experts' session 🌊 Hosting a workshop focusing on "Redefining your business’s relationship with nature" There was a huge amount of energy in the room and keen engagement from everyone, including us! Big thanks to everyone who made it happen, especially SBN—we’re excited to keep these important conversations going 💬

  • 🏗️🚢 We’ve been supporting Aotearoa New Zealand’s only TNFD early adopter Lyttelton Port Company on their nature journey for the last few years. Chapter Zero New Zealand caught up with their CEO, Graeme Sumner, to discuss some of the nature actions that the LPC has already undertaken and the merits of TNFD process from a CEO's perspective. We give a special shout out to Kirsty Brennan, Crystal Lenky and the team for their efforts to lead the way in nature disclosures in Aotearoa. Read more about LPC’s pioneering efforts below 👇
