The brains behind Scania's dual-battery invention! We're excited to share the amazing achievements of Gunnar Ledfelt, our Expert Engineer in Research & Development, who was recently recognised by Scania for his groundbreaking dual-battery invention. With 36 patents already granted and more in the pipeline, Gunnar's dedication to advancing technology is truly inspiring. For Gunnar, this journey began in 2010, and by 2012, his patent had been granted. In 2013, the first vehicle featuring his invention hit the road, marking a new standard in automotive technology. Gunnar's invention, formally titled "Activation Device and Activation Method for a Dual-Battery System," addresses a common problem drivers face when starting vehicles: dead batteries. The brilliance of Gunnar's invention lies in its simplicity and effectiveness. The system includes an additional starter battery that automatically activates when the primary battery is discharged, ensuring that the heavy vehicle starts without any extra effort from the driver. This clever mechanism saves costs, enhances driver convenience, and reduces vehicle downtime. “When I started inventing, it was a combination of curiosity and problem-solving,” says Gunnar. “I was fortunate to work with colleagues who were inventors working with patents. They taught me that a clever idea can develop into something bigger with the patent team’s help. One of the positive aspects is being able to identify with colleagues, discuss problems, seek solutions and face ups and downs together." Despite facing setbacks, his positive attitude and collaborative spirit have led to numerous successful inventions. His transformation from a curious engineer to a celebrated inventor at Scania demonstrates the strength of perseverance and teamwork.

Some people in this world strive to make a difference. They make others feel included and that diversity and different perspectives matter — it could be in a team or society at large. For Jens Åklinder Lagerström, our Head of Production & Logistics at Industrial Operations Asia in Sweden, what he does echoes through the workplace and all of Scania. He has reflected upon his shortcomings with fellow managers, and he founded the “Men for Inclusion and Equality” network to drive change for a diverse and inclusive company with Robert Hedström, inspiring men to change masculine norms and cultures. Jens has been an equality ambassador for years: "Inclusive leadership is a prerequisite for attracting and retaining a diverse workforce, fostering a better work environment for everyone and making work more enjoyable." And now, his work has been noticed outside of Scania! At the gala held by Fannys Förebilder (Fanny Widman), a platform highlighting role models for equality, he was a finalist in the category “A Man Working for Equality,” awarded in collaboration with Unizon, an organisation supporting women’s refuges and gender equality. The award recognises men who stand up for women and use their privileges to inspire change through everyday actions, both privately and professionally. Alongside two other strong finalists, Jens didn’t end up winning this year but remains a true inspiration to everyone at Scania. He says: “Equality is for everyone. It benefits everyone, no matter if you are a man or a woman. We need to do the work together, but in male-dominated areas, it’s even more important for us men to step up and show that we mean it for real. Be curious about change – we don’t need all the answers to begin! Myself, I’ve changed a lot in my mindset and behaviours over the past years.”
