Black Medical Scientific Network (BMSN)

The Black Medical Scientific Network (BMSN) is a unique society that is working together to raise the VISIBILITY of Black professionals working in industry and academia providing a supportive platform to showcase their talent. Through visible role models we want to increase the visibility of black scientist in the UK and across the globe where traditionally they have been underrepresented. In 100 years of the Nobel Laureates No black scientist has ever won a Nobel this is due to : 1) lack of Visibility 2) Not Enough of black students progressing to study science at post graduate level 3) Barriers to funding for scientific research We are tackling these areas by adopting the following strategy: Role Models Every BMSN is seen as a 'role model and mentor to the aspiring young scientist and we want all members to be visible in their local communities because by being visible we can break down barriers due to lack of representation Equip the next generation We will support and create access for young and aspiring professionals for internship, work experience and increased funding opportunities Engagement We will engage with schools, collages, institutions to ensure that we can educate the next generation about careers in research and tackle barriers that hinder funding opportunities Network We will want to increase the representation of black and ethnic minority scientist at scientific conferences and create opportunities to meet with other black and ethnic minority scientist that foster and champion collaborative partnership Recognition We will endeavor to find opportunities that show case the work of black scientist on a local, national and global level.
