  • It was a pleasure to spend time with Jonquil Hackenberg in the latest Carlyle Conversation, about the vital work the Ellen MacArthur Foundation is doing and the wider global sustainability agenda. The challenges are clear to see but the endeavour needs to match the lipservice.   Jonquil has just taken on the role of CEO of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and has a clear vision to help build on the impressive work to date, while continuing to support the wider circular economy.   A really insightful discussion and great to hear that even after such a high profile and successful career, there are still some - two-wheeled - challenges she finds difficult! • As the Carlyle Conversations interview series continues, with key learns from leaders across the UK, it was a pleasure to sit down with Mark Kent CMG, CEO of Scotch Whisky Association. After a very successful career as an Ambassador and Diplomat, Mark joined SWA nearly three years ago and kindly shared some great insight into the importance of the sector in Scotland and the UK, how it has remained so resilient and the potential impact of the upcoming budget. And as has become tradition, he had some brilliant answers to our 'quick fire questions'. Thanks again for taking part Mark, it's easy to see why the industry holds SWA and the work that you do in such high regard. It’s always good to share the positive progress made by your colleagues. Congratulations to Alice Deakin for her well-earned promotion to Associate Partner at Carlyle . Alice has made the successful transition from Industry to Search seamlessly over the last two years, having previously had a highly successful career in the Finance profession - as a CFO, at Deloitte in delivering the CFO Programme, and at ICAS as Executive Director of Learning. She also ran her own Executive Coaching business which has paired her technical skills with a great understanding of leadership and team development. Leading our CFO practice, and hosting many of our Board events, Alice is now a key part of the Carlyle team, both in London and Scotland. The Carlyle Consumer Lunch was recently hosted at the innovative The Port of Leith Distillery, a new nine storey vertical distillery based in Leith and the first of its kind in Scotland. We welcomed a number of business leaders, with a range of industries represented, to provide a diverse outlook on the industry.   The event involved an entertaining and informative distillery tour followed by lunch where we were delighted to be joined by Founder and Co-CEO Ian Stirling who kindly shared the amazing journey they have been on over the last eight years to get to this stage. Like all start-ups, it has not been without its challenges(!), but the resilience and good humour shown throughout by Ian along with the unwavering belief that they are creating a truly differentiated product was inspiring. Some of the important topics covered on the day included:   - Funding - Government support - Talent and Governance - Increase to minimum price of alcohol - International markets - Industry awareness   Thanks again to Ian for hosting us and we thoroughly recommend visiting the Port of Leith Distillery to enjoy the warm hospitality and spectacular views across the Firth of Forth. #consumersector #businessleaders #distillery

  • Ben Walker of Carlyle was delighted to welcome Mark Simmers, CEO of Celtic Renewables, to the latest in the series of Carlyle Conversations. We heard more about the incredible journey Celtic Renewables has been on over the last 12 years and the work they are doing in leading the green chemical revolution. • The biggest ever The Kiltwalk took place yesterday in Edinburgh with 9,100 walkers raising over £1.3 million for 802 different charities - an amazing event! The Carlyle team was proud to play a very small part, raising funds for the fantastic My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, which as many will know focuses on funding Research to find a cure for Motor Neurone Disease, raising awareness and supporting those with the disease. We are keeping our fundraising page open for a few more days, so if you would like to support with any donation, no matter how small, it would be greatly appreciated https://lnkd.in/exgmHz3A   We would like to give a huge shout out to Yolanda Luca of Luca’s of Musselburgh who opened early and provided us all with fabulous rolls and coffee before we started, to ensure we were well fueled for the walk. The legs are sore today but it was well worth it!

  • On 15th September 2024 the Carlyle team will be participating in the The Kiltwalk. We are raising funds for the fantastic My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, which as many will know focuses on funding Research to find a cure for Motor Neurone Disease, raising awareness and supporting those with the disease. Carlyle have had the pleasure of working with Scottish Rugby on various senior appointments, so it therefore seemed appropriate to play a very small part in honouring Doddie Weir’s legacy and doing what we can to help this brilliant cause. Additionally the charity is important to us because Erin Waddell, our wonderful Operations Coordinator, lost her father, Rory, to MND in March 2022; he had been diagnosed only 6 months prior. Unfortunately, due to the difficulty in diagnosing the disease, Erin’s father suffered its symptoms for almost 7 years while family and friends around him struggled to understand the changes in his behaviour and personality. My Name’5 Doddie’s mission is a world without Motor Neurone Disease. If you are able to support us, any donation, no matter how small, would be very much appreciated. Thank you so much!
