About us
Citizens Advice Gateshead is a long-established and progressive charity which provides free, confidential and impartial advice to people who live and work in Gateshead. Since 1957 we have enabled Gateshead people to take control of their lives; through our charity, no matter what problem they are facing we have helped people to find a way forward. 60 years on, in 2017 alone we provided free advice and information services to almost 13,000 people, resulting in tangible social and economic impacts, including over £7 million directly into the pockets of Gateshead people. The scope of our generalist and specialist advice, information and advocacy services is extensive, spanning: - Welfare benefits including Universal Credit; - Housing and homelessness; - Money advice and financial capability; - Support for people in crisis; - Advice for parents and carers of children undergoing treatment for cancer; - Advice and support for people experiencing dementia; - GP outreach services; - Support and advice for people experiencing mental health problems. As well as being supported by long-standing partners such as the Local Authority, NHS/CCG and Legal Aid to deliver services in Gateshead, over the past couple of years we have been contracted to deliver national digital/telephone-based information and advice services on behalf of BEIS and MOJ (through national Citizens Advice) for Consumer Service Helpline, Witness Service National Contact Centre and the National Citizens Advice Adviceline. This has broadened our experience and bolstered our confidence, so we are now ready to take our next step - to explore new opportunities in aligned sectors such as social housing, health, energy/utilities, financial, family, criminal justice. We are spear-heading this approach through our trading subsidiary which is currently undergoing an exciting transformation, to build on the success of our already highly acclaimed 'Job Law' employment law advice, casework and tribunals service.

Charity Chief Executive Officer, Solicitor, Social Justice Activist, Chair of Trustees for VONNE and Executive Director of Society Matters CIC
One of the joys of my job as a charity CEO is that I get to talk to some fantastically talented and passionate people about the opportunities and challenges of leading an organisation that is - let's be honest - in the business of tackling poverty, inequality and disadvantage. It's fair to say this is not usually a very sexy topic, and can be a big turn off for some people and I absolutely get that, but somehow the very talented Christopher Owens and Arlen Pettitt have re-enforced once and for all that our work can have pizazz and that "orange is indeed the new black". Please take a moment to read this feature and if you feel inspired to get involved, drop me a DM and let's talk. https://lnkd.in/eXbkGvkC #PortraitPhotography #NorthEast #NewcastleUponTyne #CitizensAdvice #Gateshead #SocietyMatters #Community #Benefits #FinancialSupport #Poverty

A huge thank you to everyone who bought tickets for and attended our Winter Warmer comedy night at the Stand last Thursday night! We raised over £4,000 by selling 166 tickets, which means that, thanks to everyone who attended, we can now fund 160 Winter Warmer packs to help families in Gateshead stay warm this winter. Every single person there has helped keep one person warmer during these cold months. That is amazing - thank you! A big shout out to goes to all the comedians who made us laugh so much. We couldn't have done it without your razor-sharp wit and cunning crowd work. And to everyone who supported this fantastic cause, your generosity and support make a real difference in our community. It was a pleasure to put the event together, and we hope everyone had a great time. Our fight against fuel poverty continues, but thanks for helping us land a significant blow in this battle! Stay tuned for more updates and events. Together, we can make this winter a little warmer for everyone. 🌟

Do you or your clients claim benefits? We’d love to hear from you. Society Matters Group is collaborating with Amnesty International UK to investigate the experiences of people claiming benefits, focusing on whether the benefits system supports everyday human rights. If you or someone you know claims benefits, please take five minutes to complete our survey. Your input will help us gather the evidence needed to advocate for changes to the system. Please share the survey link with anyone you know who can help us capture as wide a range of experiences with the benefits system as possible: https://lnkd.in/ec5iCxtR Thank you for your support!
