As consumers, we hold immense purchasing power, and the decisions we make each day – like how we travel, eat, or power our homes - are critically important to reducing emissions. At #COP29, Consumers International is calling on governments to unlock that power. We are working with and through our Members – consumer organisations around the world - to ensure that nations include commitments to transform consumption as well as production within the next round of Nationally-Determined Contributions. ➡ Read our open letter to governments: https://lnkd.in/edHEuWSq ➡ Contact impact@consint.org to join this call to action. Open finance is changing how we interact with financial services, creating exciting opportunities for consumers and businesses alike. This work offers timely insights into how countries can design inclusive financial frameworks to maximise these benefits while managing risks. We congratulate CGAP on this valuable work and are grateful to have contributed as part of the peer review process, alongside esteemed organisations such as the The World Bank, IFC - International Finance Corporation, African Development Bank Group, International Monetary Fund and Bank for International Settlements – BIS. Our input highlighted the importance of using open finance to drive broader consumer benefits, such as financial sector development, innovation, and inclusion. We also stressed the need for a harmonised approach to consumer protection and supervision, which we’re glad to see reflected in the report. #financialinclusion #openfinance #consumerprotection
#Openfinance can be transformational for #financialinclusion. This is why, following the early examples of the UK, Australia, EU countries, as well as Brazil and India, over 50 countries are implementing or considering open finance ! This promises to be transformational for financial inclusion but can also carry significant risks. Therefore, there is a need to collect lessons from implementations, identify catalyzing elements, as well as risks and solutions. This is why CGAP published with The International Monetary Fund, The World Bank, the Bank for International Settlements – BIS, and the United Nations Secretary-General's Special Advocate for Financial Health (#UNSGSA) guiding principles to support financial sector authorities in their efforts, providing them with a roadmap, and offering insights on the potential implications of different policy and design choices. The considerations are structured around 10 key elements of an effective open finance framework, including i) clear policy objectives, 2) process leadership by public authorities, 3) governance arrangements with collaboration with the industry; 4) proportionate regulation, with clear rules for customer-permissioned data access, 5) robust risk-based oversight and supervision, 6) enhanced consumer and data protection, 7) consumer information and awareness, 8) broad participation by data holders and data users, 9) standardized API infrastructure and a common architecture, and 10) pricing that supports large adoption of open finance products. https://lnkd.in/dvCFJb2n

Every year that passes without decisive action, the scale of the climate challenge becomes even greater. As #COP29 negotiations closed on Sunday, our team reflect on where we fell short, and what needs to happen next: ➡️ While we welcomed a new goal on climate finance– the $300bn figure falls well below what is needed; without significantly increased contributions from high-income countries, we are on course for a catastrophic 3 degrees of warming. This will have devastating impacts for vulnerable countries and communities around the world and significantly undermine access to food and energy for consumers everywhere. ➡️ Parties also failed to uphold last year’s commitment to transition away from fossil fuels; and there was strong opposition from several countries to the integration of gender justice and human rights into climate action agendas. 2025 will be a critical year for climate action. We will continue to work with our Members and governments to ensure that action on consumption is addressed within national climate strategies. Read more: https://lnkd.in/edHEuWSq

🌍♻️ Plastic pollution is more than just a waste management problem – it affects people's health, wellbeing, and livelihoods. Microplastics can be found in our food, water, even running through our bloodstream. And as a by-product of fossil fuels, plastics are accelerating the climate crisis. 📍 The negotiations happening this week - for an international, legally binding instrument to tackle plastic pollution - are a rare and historic opportunity. Consumers International is working to help secure an ambitious treaty which delivers a safe, sustainable world for people everywhere, and which places consumer rights and needs at its heart. ➡️ Read our position: https://lnkd.in/eQRh6YS9 #GlobalPlasticsTreaty | #INC5

With data flowing across countries daily—from messages to online purchases—our personal information is everywhere. But who’s looking out for consumers when things go wrong? Our new report “𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘐𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘣𝘭𝘦 & 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘶𝘮𝘦𝘳-𝘊𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘤 𝘙𝘦𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘋𝘢𝘵𝘢 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘶𝘴𝘦 𝘈𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴 𝘉𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴” tackles this question. While international agreements promise to protect consumer data, too often, those protections don’t hold up in real life. This leaves people vulnerable—especially in places where data privacy laws are weaker. 𝘞𝘩𝘺 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳? When consumer rights are compromised, trust in the digital economy suffers. That’s why we’re calling for a coordinated, global approach that includes everyone—policymakers, civil society, businesses, and international organisations. This is about more than privacy; it’s about building a digital future that’s fair, safe, and empowering for everyone. 📑Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eJ8SWfAG #DataProtection #ConsumerRights #CrossBorderData #ConsumersInternational

🥕 🌿 Food is at the heart of our daily lives – and it could be at the heart of the transition too. The IPCC has identified dietary transition as the single most impactful demand-side action, with the ability to cut food sector emissions by 44%—the equivalent of 8 billion tonnes of CO2. But if sustainable options remain out of reach or unaffordable for most consumers, this potential is lost. 🌍 Today on #FoodDay at COP29, we are spotlighting the ways our Members are making healthy and sustainable food choices more available, accessible, and affordable for consumers. ➡ https://lnkd.in/edHEuWSq #GoodFoodForAll #FoodWaterandAgricultureDay #COP29 | Idec - Instituto Brasileiro de Defesa do Consumidor

🌾It's Food, Agriculture, and Water Day at #COP29 - and the need for transformative action on food systems must not be overlooked. A food system which centres people’s rights and needs will deliver greater climate resilience, tackle global hunger, protect and restore nature and biodiversity, and contribute towards more equitable and prosperous economies. Consumers International is proud to have signed and contributed to the High-Level Climate Champions Food Systems Call to Action, urging governments to keep people-centred food systems transformation on the global agenda ahead of the 3 Rio Conventions. ➡ https://lnkd.in/g8A3ucmk #GoodFoodForAll #COP29 #FoodAgricultureWaterDay
