Loneliness is a public health issue that worsens other inequalities. In Islington, where an estimated 54,000 people live below the poverty line, rates of depression and mental health issues are among the highest in the country. About one in six adults in the borough have been diagnosed with anxiety, depression, or both. This makes tackling isolation and building community support more critical than ever. This year, 3,000 Angel Crackers will be made and sold across Angel, not just as a charming holiday accessory but as part of Islington Giving’s ongoing work to combat loneliness locally. Every cracker sold will help fund vital projects in the borough, offering vulnerable residents opportunities for connection, support, and improved wellbeing. 🎁 This is brilliant project bringing our community of supporters together to tackle the crucial issue of loneliness and social isolation this winter. ❄️ Let’s pull together to end loneliness in Islington this winter. What can we do as a society to tackle domestic abuse? This was the question posed at our first, public, interactive conversation wall in Angel Central, organised by the Domestic Abuse Development Partners (DADP) project. The event was insightful and we received hundreds of answers which you can read about in our blog by Programme Manager Laura. Today we begin the #16DaysOfActivism (25 November to 10 December) against gender-based violence. This year’s theme is ‘Unite to End Violence against Women,’ and an opportunity to raise awareness, call for accountability and action. 📣ANNOUNCEMENT! 📣 Google.org donates £445k to Islington Giving and Camden Giving! We are thrilled to announce that Google.org has once again stepped forward with a significant donation of £445,000 for community groups across Islington and Camden, working together to tackle food poverty and poor mental health. In the past two years, our partnership with Google UK has raised £450,000 for community groups across Islington. Their funding has powered our Mind the Gap fund, supporting local projects working with adults who are homeless or at risk of homelessness whilst experiencing complex challenges, and two rounds of the Islington Food Fund, working together to tackle food poverty. This new donation of £222,500 will enable us to expand our reach even further, working with more local groups and tackling food poverty head-on, helping Islington residents navigate the rising cost of living. We are beyond grateful to Google.org for their ongoing support. Stay tuned for more details on how this will impact our local efforts. 🚀 Unleashing the power within our community! 🚀 A huge thank you to everyone who joined our funder roundtable and launch of our report on ‘People, Power and Place’, which is a summary evaluation of our Participatory Grant Making (PGM) programmes over the last 6 years. Yesterday's event brought together a fantastic mix of funders, residents, and community changemakers to explore our PGM journey and its transformative impact for our community, for our organisation and for the resident panellists. At the roundtable, we dove into key discussions on PGM's strengths and challenges, its relationship with traditional funding methods, and the growing appetite to embrace community-led approaches.  We were also inspired by reflections from some of our brilliant resident panellists: ✨ “It gave us agency to make changes. I was around like-minded individuals who wanted social change. It was very, very interesting, and a rewarding role…” – Izzy, former Young Grant Maker and YGM lead  ✨ “I needed a reason to get out of the house... My voice was heard and valued. I feel like the knowledge I had in the borough; I could use it to change it in some way. Celebrating the value of local in CSR and philanthropy 💜 This morning we were delighted to celebrate and encourage fellow businesses to embrace the ‘value of local in CSR and Philanthropy strategies’. It was brilliant to welcome over 50 businesses and corporate foundations to Linklaters to explore how we can amplify local impact through collaboration. Our key insights from this morning’s energetic discussion are: 🚀 Collaborating with other businesses and local charity partners can help reduce risk while making life better for everyone in the communities where we live and work. 🚀 Place-based initiatives are easy to engage with and offer agile and knowledgeable opportunities for innovation, measurable results, and staff involvement. There are now 25 Giving Schemes and place-based initiatives in London. 🚀 There's huge potential to scale place-based impact, so even if you’re a national or global business, start local and scale what works. The best quote of the day was ‘We Know Our Place’ in a really good way, so we may be using that more often from now on! At Islington Giving, we believe in shifting power to the hands of local people. Our Young Grant Makers programme does just that, giving young people the chance to shape youth services in Islington. In 2025, Islington Giving and The BIG Alliance are taking this programme to a new level – each Young Grant Maker will be paired with a corporate mentor.
