Our vision is for the UK to be a global leader in developing & commercialising applications for compound semiconductors
About us
Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult is the UK’s authority on compound semiconductor applications and commercialisation. The Catapult works with start-ups, SMEs, large organisations and academia to de-risk commercialisation, eliminate barriers to market and accelerate compound semiconductor technologies used in transport, future telecoms, energy distribution, quantum and data centres. (CSA) Catapult was established in 2018 by Innovate UK to help the UK become a global leader in compound semiconductors. We have a world-leading team of experts with the know-how, experience and track record in developing and commercialising compound semiconductor technologies and applications. We bring compound semiconductor applications to life in three key areas: the road to Net Zero, Future Telecoms and intelligent sensing. We are a trusted neutral convener, working with large companies, SMEs, and academia. We help de-risk new innovations and act as a neutral convener, bringing innovators, industry and academia together. CSA Catapult is a not-for-profit organisation headquartered in South Wales with locations in Bristol, the North East and Scotland. We have capabilities in power electronics, advanced packaging, RF & microwave, and photonics. The next wave of emerging applications will have an enormous impact on our lives. Compound semiconductors will enable a host of new and exciting applications in the electrification of transport, clean energy, defence and security and digital communications markets.

📢 Our CEO, Martin McHugh MBA MA has had a letter published in the Financial Times this morning calling for semiconductors to be placed at the heart of the UK's industrial plans. 📜 Letter: Semiconductors must be at heart of industrial plans Vishay’s decision to invest £51m into its Newport facility is a much-needed boost for South Wales and the UK. As Europe, the US, Japan and China significantly invest in their industries, we are at risk of being left behind. The UK cannot compete financially with these countries. Instead, we must invest in areas of strength, such as chip design, R&D, IP and compound semiconductors. There are over 200 semiconductor companies in the UK who generate £9.6 billion of revenues and employ 15,000 people. This week, the UK government closed its consultation on a new industrial strategy. This is an opportunity for the UK to chart a new course for semiconductors in the UK. They are a critical, enabling technology. A long-term investment approach is needed to boost UK strengths. We have recommended to the government that a £305m semiconductor investment fund is enough to establish a UK semiconductor ‘super cluster’, backed by the creation of a new National Semiconductor Institute to act as a single, unified voice for the industry and bolster our pipeline of talent. This long-term approach would drive growth and the creation of jobs across the UK. 👨🔬 Last week we attended the Pathways Careers and FE Fair at Croesyceiliog School with our UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UKESF) interns Asad Adil and Osian Jones. Approximately 400-500 students from Year 9 and 11, as well as students from Year 6 local feeder schools, attended the careers exhibition hall throughout the day to learn about career pathways. Students were given the opportunity to experience CSA Catapult's virtual reality headsets to learn more about compound semiconductors, their capabilities and devices they enable, as well as potential careers available to them. ⚡ #STEM #Careers #Compound #Semiconductors #Education #Science #Technology #Engineering #Interns #Internship #Engineer

A huge thank you to Amy Romaniuk, Paul Larcey, and Innovate UK Business Connect for organizing an exceptional meeting on Future Computing Technologies and Energy Efficient Computing at the London Institute for Healthcare Engineering. What a view! The day opened with a fantastic introduction from Prof. Bashir M. Al-Hashimi CBE FREng FRS, spotlighting emerging technologies and paving the way for thought-provoking discussions. It was great to reconnect with Adnan Mehonic, Karen Bach, Prof. Sergey Saveliev, Neil Kemp, Stefano Mensa, PhD MBCS and the team at STFC Hartree Centre Engaging talk from Danyal Akarca on polychronization or spike-timing-dependent plasticity that allows the neural network model to select the most effective axonal transmission delay between neurons. Using delays to improve performance got my neurons ("gates") going!!! The day also featured a presentation by Jayakrishnan Chandrappan on semiconductor packaging innovations that will drive the future of computing. An inspiring highlight came from Prof. Judith Driscoll , who called for the community to unite and collaboratively shape a roadmap for advancing this critical field. I was particularly intrigued and inspired by discussions with Julian Weinberg, Dialogue Action exploring the transformative potential of neurotechnology in mediation and international conflict - a field that holds immense promise for reshaping mental health treatment. Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult are excited to collaborate with the UK’s neuromorphic community to accelerate advancements in this transformative space.
