CSA Catapult has put forward eight recommendations to support the UK government's industrial strategy. Scientists, designers and engineers came together recently to attend the IEEE WiPDA conference, co-hosted by Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult and Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd, to meet, collaborate and share ideas with one another. At the conference, a range of speakers and exhibitors showcased the international opportunities in power electronics 🌍 CSA Catapult showcased its unique offering of cutting-edge technology, expertise and capability, used to design and develop high-performing power electronics modules and converters for automotive, energy and industrial applications. 💬 Ingo Lüdtke, head of power electronics at CSA Catapult said, “We have established a good power module design, test and validation capability and we are moving to power converters.  “To fully exploit the benefits of compound semiconductors we will need to use AI. 🤝 Earlier this year, Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult and Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd co-hosted the IEEE WiPDA-Europe conference. At the conference, hosted in Cardiff, scientists, designers and engineers came together from the UK, Europe and the US to meet and collaborate. During WiPDA-Europe, we caught up with Martin McHugh MBA MA, CEO at CSA Catapult, who explained the opportunities for wide bandgap semiconductors, especially in solid state transformers, and the opportunities to develop smart energy grids using power electronics. 💬 Martin said: "The UK needs to collaborate more. 📢 Our CEO, Martin McHugh MBA MA has had a letter published in the Financial Times this morning calling for semiconductors to be placed at the heart of the UK's industrial plans.   📜 Letter: Semiconductors must be at heart of industrial plans Vishay’s decision to invest £51m into its Newport facility is a much-needed boost for South Wales and the UK. As Europe, the US, Japan and China significantly invest in their industries, we are at risk of being left behind. The UK cannot compete financially with these countries. Instead, we must invest in areas of strength, such as chip design, R&D, IP and compound semiconductors. There are over 200 semiconductor companies in the UK who generate £9.6 billion of revenues and employ 15,000 people. This week, the UK government closed its consultation on a new industrial strategy. This is an opportunity for the UK to chart a new course for semiconductors in the UK. They are a critical, enabling technology. A long-term investment approach is needed to boost UK strengths. We have recommended to the government that a £305m semiconductor investment fund is enough to establish a UK semiconductor ‘super cluster’, backed by the creation of a new National Semiconductor Institute to act as a single, unified voice for the industry and bolster our pipeline of talent.
