Today is Transgender Day of Remembrance, a time to honour those lost to anti-transgender violence and to reflect on how we can create safer, more supportive workplaces for transgender colleagues. 🏳️⚧️ While some progress has been made, transgender people still encounter significant barriers at work, from hiring discrimination to lack of basic support, and even hostility on the job. Creating an inclusive workplace goes beyond policies - it includes respect in everyday interactions, accessible facilities, and active allyship. 🌍 This Black History Month, we’ve been reflecting on the crucial difference between being ‘not racist’ and actively being ‘anti-racist’. 🗣️ “Anti-racism is the commitment to fight racism wherever you find it, including in yourself” – Ijeoma Oluo. To be anti-racist, we must: 👂 Acknowledge and listen to the experiences of people of colour. 🔍 Look inward and recognise that none of us are free of bias. 🛠️ Take steps to identify and work to rectify those biases. 🛑 Vow to never be passive in times of injustice and be an active bystander. How to be an active bystander: If you ever think “someone should do/say something,” remember 💡 YOU could be that someone. Try: ➡️ Direct Action – Challenge the perpetrator directly. 👥 Delegation – Get a manager or authority figure to intervene. 💬 Distraction – De-escalate and shift the focus with a question or change of topic. ⏳ Delay – Check in with the person affected after the incident. 🌟 This Black History Month, let’s continue to learn, take action, and work together ✊🏾 #BlackHistoryMonth #BHM2024 #AntiRacism #StandUpToRacism #ActiveBystander #DiversityInRecruitment #InclusiveWorkplaces
