💥 Yesterday, 14 teachers of creative, drama, arts and digital from Dorset Careers Hub schools and colleges, plus colleagues from the The Careers & Enterprise Company, attended the Creative Industries Teacher Encounter event hosted by Lighthouse - Arts and Entertainment | Poole. Taking place during Discover Creative Careers Week, teachers had the opportunity to meet staff across different departments of the Lighthouse, which is the largest arts centre in the United Kingdom outside London. Attendees had the opportunity to: 🎛 Go backstage and learn about the world of technical theatre from the experts (lighting, sound, stage management) 🎭 Meet directors and backstage staff from the current production of Pride and Prejudice(sort of) to hear about their roles and their own career journeys, including Patrick Gilchrist MBE 🤝 Network with other teachers and update curriculum plans 👩🏫 Discuss how they will use the experience to benefit their lessons and share information with their colleagues Thank you to the entire team for such a fantastic day and promoting the many different pathways into the creative sector. Patric Gilchrist MBE, spoke about the importance of encouraging young people into the industry. “It is vital to educate the educators about the benefits of cultural careers and how to be more creative in thinking about careers,” he said. “Not only are there ways into a career for young people who perhaps don’t perform so well in mainstream education, but you can accumulate a huge range of transferable skills. My own son started out as a theatre technician and is now a senior police officer.” 📢 This supports key messages that were identified throughout the day, highlighting the value of transferrable skills, the importance of maths to support with budgets and planning, and important key employability skills such as being resilient, agile, confident, positive, believing in yourself and having good communication skills. Find out more about the activities Lighthouse - Arts and Entertainment | Poole have been supporting this week, to raise aspirations into Creative Industries: https://lnkd.in/dh7mfw6u Our next encounter is taking place on Friday 31st January 2025, with NHS Dorset at Dorchester Hospital. Students from Bovington Academy (Year 6) and Bere Regis Primary School (Years 5 and 6) visited Dorset Innovation Park as part of the #startsmalldreambig programme during Discover Creative Careers week. Organised by Dorset Council UK Digital Dorset in collaboration with Dorset Careers Hub, the event aimed to inspire young people to explore careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) and highlight the innovative employment opportunities available in our county. We are very grateful to everyone involved who made the day a huge success, and helping us to inspire students from a young age, showing what is possible! Earlier this week (with far less snow ❄) we were delighted to host students from Bovington Academy and Bere Regis Primary School at the Dorset Innovation Park. As part of the Start Small, Dream Big programme during Creative Careers week, these young innovators got stuck into hands-on challenges at the BattleLab. Colin Wood our Innovation Lead and Cllr Richard Biggs spoke to the children about innovation and its significance, leading to some interesting responses! Activities included designing clay boats and paper planes to coding in Roblox and Segway egg-and-spoon obstacle courses. The children had a blast while learning about the endless possibilities in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths. 🚀🎮 Through initiatives like this, we aim to remove barriers and stereotypes that limit children’s thinking about their future careers, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to dream big! Thank you to Heather Byrom, Matthew Crompton, Thomas Short, Katy Skelland and Julius Davidson BEng(Hons) IEng MIMechE fCMgr MCMI for inspiring our future entrepreneurs! Let’s keep nurturing that creativity and innovation right here in Dorset. #digitaldorset #dorset #careers #startsmalldreambig Dorset Careers Hub Tim Robertson Gary Littledyke Penny Syddall FCIPR Photos credit: Rachel Baker

The Gatsby Benchmarks for good #careers guidance have been updated. Since the Benchmarks were launched a decade ago, careers guidance has been improved for millions of young people. A lot has changed in that time. The updated benchmarks will deliver even more impact for young people over the next ten years. The core of the eight Gatsby Benchmarks remains the same, but the changes that have been made are really important. ➡️ There is no immediate action required from you at this time other than to reflect, celebrate and encourage strategic thinking in preparation for implementation. ➡️ We encourage you to read the report, Good Career Guidance: The Next Ten Years, to learn more about the rationale for the changes and see examples of impressive practice: https://bit.ly/40O1S53 #GatsbyBenchmarks #careers Gatsby Charitable Foundation
