ECD Architects, appointed by Equans UK & Ireland, is leading the retrofit of three high-rise residential towers in Shieldfield—Lort House, Pandon Court, and King Charles Tower.   This transformative project will deliver thermal and aesthetic upgrades to over 200 homes, significantly improving energy efficiency, reducing carbon emissions and, most importantly, enhancing comfort for residents.   Key measures include:   🔹 External Wall Insulation (EWI) for better thermal performance. 🔹 Enhanced roof insulation to reduce heat loss. 🔹 Installation of new energy-efficient windows for improved comfort and reduced energy use. 🔹 Upgraded ventilation systems for healthier indoor environments. 🔹 Addition of rooftop Air Source Heat Pumps, advancing the transition to renewable energy.   Beyond functionality, the project features an aesthetic revitalisation of the towers, introducing a simplified, cohesive colour palette. Each block retains its unique identity while gaining a fresh character through complementary accent tones (developed in collaboration with residents & local planners) to reflect the community's vision.   A key success factor: No resident relocations. All work has been carefully planned and executed with residents remaining in their homes, minimising disruption while delivering maximum impact.   To ensure the best outcomes, thermal bridge calculations have been carried out to enable the team to reduce heat loss and avoid any risk of condensation. This means the works meet PAS 2035 and that the residents have warmer homes.   The retrofit of these Sheildfield towers is a testament to the power of sustainable design and community-focused improvements, creating homes that are not only energy-efficient but also more comfortable and visually inspiring.

Last Thursday, our Preston office team stepped onto the ice (literally!) for a unique and exciting experience: curling! 🥌 Organised by Forum for the Built Environment (fbe), the evening kicked off with a beginner-friendly tutorial on the basics of curling. Once we had the hang of it, a lively mini-competition put our skills—and our teamwork—to the test! The fun didn’t end on the ice—afterward, we enjoyed a delicious fish and chip dinner, offering the perfect opportunity to relax, connect, and share some laughs. It was a fantastic evening of friendly competition, great food, and even better company. A big thank you to fbe for hosting such a memorable event! And a special shout-out to our team who made it to the rink: 🔹 Wong Boon Zhen 🔹 Hannah Morant 🔹 James Traynor 🔹 Maria Buenaventura 🔹 Emily Slade Check out the collage of our team from the event—we’re already looking forward to the next one! 😄 #TeamBuilding #Preston #Architecture #CurlingFun #StaffSocial #FBE #CurlingNight Find out more about the event here: https://ow.ly/G17e50UfqRt

Group Chief Executive at Skipton Group

Today I’ve had the pleasure of joining a panel of experts from our Group businesses alongside academics and other partners at Skipton HQ to discuss retrofitting UK homes. An area where we can show leadership and help the UK on a journey to net zero and more affordable home ownership. The UK has the oldest housing stock in Europe, giving us architectural beauty but also terrible energy efficiency. This affects not only our carbon footprint but also the health, financial wellbeing, and quality of life for millions of people in the UK. We’re mid-way through retrofitting a property in Skipton. We’ve carried out loads of tests before this work began, and we’ll shortly be repeating these tests once the retrofitting work is complete to see exactly what difference this project has made. Everyone on today’s panel is involved in our retrofit, and today we shared with colleagues just some of our learnings so far, some of the questions we’ll be seeking to answer, and what this all means for people and their homes. Here’s some of the key takeaways: 🏠 The housing reality There are around 29 million habitable homes in the UK, but around 50% have an EPC rating of C or below. For us to create impactful change, we need more than theoretical debate—we need to lean in and lead, guide, and provide tangible solutions for people. 🌱 Enabling retrofitting It’s essential that retrofitting doesn’t become something that only those who can afford it benefits from. Working across the Skipton Group, we’re exploring ways to support sustainable upgrades without creating market disparities, so that everyone can access the finance needed for a greener home. We’re firmly focused on enabling, not hindering, access to retrofit finance. 💡 Empowering consumers and industry In the same way the rise of hybrid and electric cars was supported by the car industry, we need to support mortgage brokers and advisers to become advocates for retrofitting. Helping them learn about options to green a home is a key step in giving them the confidence to guide their clients on sustainability journeys. We discussed today how we really want to expand education, support, and engagement with our broker partners so they feel they can better support consumers. 🔎 Looking ahead This isn’t just an environmental effort—it’s a venture with clear social value, one that benefits our members and homeowners across the country. As regulation and legislations change, we should anticipate the value of homes will reflect their energy efficiency. This is only the beginning. As we continue our work, we look forward to sharing more about our findings and the practical solutions that will help us all live sustainably. Together, we can retrofit the future. 🌍💡 Annie Heaton Michaela Wright #SustainableLiving #Retrofitting #ClimateAction #GreenHomes #Leadership #SkiptonGroup
