  • 📚 Can data-driven tools help tackle teacher shortages? In Sierra Leone, the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) is addressing the country’s high pupil-to-teacher ratios—some of the toughest in West Africa—through bold, data-driven action. Earlier this year, TSC added 2,000+ teachers to the payroll using a deployment algorithm. This innovative approach ensures teachers are assigned to schools more equitably, where they are needed most. 💡 What is a deployment algorithm? It’s a tool that processes data—like school location, student-teacher ratios, and subject demand—to solve complex challenges in teacher placement. This is a powerful example of using evidence and technology to drive impact. Dive into the conversation here: https://ow.ly/gQz650UslIS

  • A multi-modal and data-driven approach is well aligned with effective distance learning approaches. At EdTech Hub we are passionate about taking a learner-focused, rather than technology-first, perspective to our work. For many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), radio, television, and mobile devices present themselves as likely channels to reach a higher percentage of learners. • While technology offers the potential to overcome the barriers of isolation, several infrastructural and capacity challenges prevent equitable access to electricity and internet connectivity. Gilgit-Baltistan’s mountainous topography, frequent landslides, scheduled and unscheduled power outages (‘load shedding’), and unreliable internet connectivity create infrastructural barriers to access. Our report explores Gilgit-Baltistan’s ‘STEAM’ (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) and ‘Smart Schools’ interventions to highlight the transformative potential of targeted educational reforms and EdTech solutions, which were designed to help overcome some of the implementation challenges posed by Gilgit-Baltistan’s rugged terrain and socio-economic constraints.
