Earlier this week, our CEO, chris kirke, and Commercial Director, Jon Cummings, attended The Food and Drink Federation’s Food & Drink Investment Summit. Following a fantastic keynote address from Rt Hon Steve Reed OBE MP, we heard some brilliant insights from the esteemed panel on driving growth and investment within the UK’s food and drink manufacturing industry.    With a focus on bolstering UK food security, the event discussed the ambition to work with government to create and deliver a plan for growth that will help the sector realise its full potential. As an agri-tech firm ourselves, it was great to see automation and innovation considered a key part of this ambition, highlighting its value in optimising the supply chain and its ability to drive productivity and growth.

COP29 is well underway and today, delegates will be discussing Food, Water and Agriculture. Discussions will centre around the increasing threat to food security as global warming disrupts our access to vital natural resources like water. It’s no secret that traditional agriculture consumes, wastes and pollutes our water supplies. But climate change is adding even more stress to our already strained water systems, with a steady depletion of both surface water and aquifers. Set against the backdrop of a rapidly growing population, the need to find less water intensive ways of feeding the world has never been more important. Vertical farming can be part of this solution, using significantly less water than industrial farming, without the use of chemicals. And at Fischer Farms, our closed-loop system means water waste is minimised. In this way, we can preserve one of the world’s most precious natural resources, whilst still delivering much-needed fresh produce to feed the nation. We hope today’s discussions consider vertical farming as a viable solution to one of the most pressing issues facing food production. #COP29 #WaterUse #Water #Agriculture #Hydroponics #VerticalFarming #FoodSupply #SustainableFood

Great to be in Hanover earlier this week at the Inhouse Farming pre-opening event. Our founder, Tristan Fischer, joined Andy Manley, Joyce Rasquin and Michael Stelter to discuss Renewable Energy Solutions for the Future of Digital Infrastructure, CEA and Food and Feed Systems. When it comes to CEA, we have always championed the intrinsic link between energy and vertical farming. Renewable energy is central to the scalability of vertical farming, and it is vital that the infrastructure is invested in, protected and made accessible to our industry. Afterall, It has the potential to transform the industry and safeguard a reliable and sustainable food supply chain.

Vertical farm site visit 🌱   We were pleased to welcome a group of clients and prospective clients to tour Fischer Farms Ltd vertical farming facility in Staffordshire, a portfolio company in our sustainable infrastructure strategy.   Vertical farming delivers a number of efficiencies and benefits: 💧 Reduced water use - Vertical farming uses up to 95% less water than required by field-grown crops   🧪 No pesticides - there is no chemical run-off which causes damage to the natural environment   🌦️ Weather resistant/food security - Indoor farming enables the production of more consistently yielding and homogeneous crops that are not affected by volatile weather patterns exacerbated by climate change. There was also an opportunity to try the produce which included chives, parsley, watercress and sorrel 🥬   #thefutureoffood #sustainableinfrastructure

Earlier this week, our founder Tristan Fischer joined the Rural Economy Research Group’s parliamentary seminar on food security, in his capacity as a RERG Executive Committee Member.    Bringing together government, academics and agricultural leaders, the meeting discussed the importance of British food and the growing need for further strengthen our food supply chain and security.    Tristan, who joined the Rural Economy Research Group committee last year, introduced Fischer Farms’ vertical farming mission to attendees and highlighted the industry’s key challenges around energy, planning and accreditation.    Once again, it was an honour to sit on such an esteemed committee and play our part in bolstering our nations’ food resilience and shape the future of farming.

Yesterday, parliamentarians, academics and rural business leaders came together for the Rural Economy Research Group’s parliamentary seminar on food security. The meeting, chaired by Anne McIntosh, recognised the strategic importance of British food and farming to the nation and highlighted the need for further resilience within our food supply chain. Contributions made to the panel echoed the key challenges the rural economy face in light of the recent Budget with concerns around agricultural property relief tax, growing operational costs and issues with land use and soil health that impact farmers and growers up and down the country. Thank you to our speakers Tristan Fischer, Baroness Rock, Sir Charles Godfrey, and EFRA Committee Chair Alistair Carmichael MP who provided excellent contributions and insight into the need for a new Local Land Use Framework, a long term strategy for protecting the UK’s biosecurity, a review of arms length regulators within the agricultural sector and calls for a holistic view to balance consumer expectations with fair pricing for UK farmers. The group also heard from members who showcased the importance of mental health amongst farmers and growers and the need for a robust workforce. The group will now review the evidence and contributions made by members and provide recommendations for Government policymakers in Westminster and beyond. A huge thank you to our sponsors Fischer Farms Ltd, University of Exeter, Newcastle University and University of Nottingham. To get involved in the groups next session and to find out more, please contact rerg@jbp.co.uk

Over 35 guests embarked on an exclusive tour of the Broadland Food Innovation Centre, followed by a behind-the-scenes look at our operations here at the Food Enterprise Park. It was brilliant to share our mission and talk about what the future of farming holds for sustainable food production and food security.
