We are a non-profit organisation working to foster the symbiotic relationship between teaching and making art in the UK.
About us
Freelands Foundation believes art is central to a broad and balanced education, and a right for everyone. We are driven by a conviction in the vital role of learning and making to foster creativity, resilience, criticality and problem-solving that empowers and equips us for the future. We champion the symbiotic relationship between teaching, learning and making art, and encourage artists to teach and view teaching as an artistic practice. We value life-long learning as integral to artists’ work, enabling collaborative relationships with teachers, schools and universities with galleries and museums. Fostering the development of bold and diverse approaches to teaching, we research and explore art education at all levels: from primary to postgraduate, as well as outside the formal system. Through progressive training and development, we support teachers to expand and sustain their practices. Our approach combines action research, through academic commissions, workshops, discussions, exhibitions, publications, films, partnerships and a dedicated library; and funding, through grants, awards, fellowships and residencies.

On Friday, the House of Lords debated the Visual Arts Manifesto, co-authored by DACS, us, and 21 other visual arts orgs from across the UK, detailing suggestions on necessary reforms to art education and how the new government can widen opportunity within the creative industries. 🔗 Read the 12-page manifesto at https://lnkd.in/evHw8Fu4
The Visual Arts Manifesto, co-authored by DACS and 22 other visual arts organisations, was discussed in the UK House of Lords today. Nicholas Trench, the Earl of Clancarty, said: “I ask the government to look at the recommendations in the Visual Arts Manifesto, led by DACS. One recommendation is the appointment of a Freelancer Commissioner for the arts, to look at their rights and levels of pay. It is good the government is addressing workers’ rights, and this should be a part of that.” Read more about what took place: https://lnkd.in/eB2amEp7 Acme ActionSpace AN:ARTISTS INFORMATION COMPANY Art Fund Artquest Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) Crafts Council Creative Land Trust CuratorSpace CVAN #CreativeWorkspaceNetwork Engage, the National Association for Gallery Education #FrankFairArtistPay Freelands Foundation Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC) GuildHE Harlesden High Street London Higher Outside In Art #QuenchGallery Scottish Contemporary Art Network SPACE Studios London University Alliance (UK) #DACS #DacsForArtists #VisualArtsManifesto #ArtsCopyright #HouseofLords #ArtsEducation

As Freelands Foundation maintains its mission and manifesto that art is central to a broad and balanced education, and a right for everyone, we’re proud to join our peers in the sector (including Art Fund, a-n The Artists Information Company, DACS and more) in calling on the successive UK government to invest more in creative education in schools. Our goal is to sustain the visual arts long-term and integrate visual literacy into all stages of the curriculum, enabling greater exposure for school children to engage with our vast ecosystem of cultural organisations. 🔗 Find out more about our collective suggestions at https://lnkd.in/e2mUUkAF

Visual literacy is increasingly relevant now, in this image dominated world. How are we preparing our children to analyse, critically engage and question the visual culture they are immersed in? Using art to support children’s learning and experiences is more important than ever. #TheSuperpowerofLooking Art UK Freelands Foundation a primary school arts programme encourages this 4th pillar of education by building on a sensory curriculum, including everyone in the learning experience. #visualliteracy #everyonelearning #adaptiveteaching #artseducation #SENDarts
