🌳 🎀 Celebrate Tree Dressing Day on 4th December! During the first weekend of December, communities across the UK come together to celebrate Tree Dressing Day, a beautiful tradition that honours the trees we all share. Rooted in customs from around the world, tree dressing is a chance to connect with nature and your community. Whether it’s tying ribbons, adding bright fabrics, or sharing tree stories, this special day is about saying “thank you” to the trees that enrich our lives. At Grown in Britain we have so much to thank trees for! From providing sustainable timber that supports local industries and rural economies, to capturing carbon, enhancing biodiversity, and inspiring innovation, trees are vital to the well-being of our communities, environment, and members’ work. Are you planning on showing our leafy friends some love? We'd love to see your photos! #NationalTreeDressingDay #ThankYouTrees

Forestry and Logging
Working at every stage of the forest product supply chain to support the use of UK timber.
About us
Grown in Britain works at every stage of the forest product supply chain to support the use of UK timber. Over recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on the importance of source. People want to support our nation’s woods and forests by purchasing local timber products; and major construction companies, high street retailers and public authorities are demanding Grown in Britain products as part of their procurement policies. In the UK, we import £7.8bn of foreign timber each year, whilst neglecting the potential of our own forests and woodlands. Only China imports more wood than the UK. Grown in Britain certification reduces unnecessary imports, by encouraging and supporting active and sustainable management of our own forests and woodlands.

A new Tree Planting Taskforce has been launched today by Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to oversee the planting of millions of trees across the UK. The Taskforce, chaired by the forestry ministers from the four nations, brings together representatives from key arm’s-length bodies and delivery partners from across the UK. "There has never been a more crucial time to take action to increase and improve the number of trees, woods and forests growing across the UK for future years" says our Chair, Richard Stanford. "It is vital that our four nations unite and work in partnership on this mission." Read more: https://lnkd.in/e2QRmTTV #NationalTreeWeek Image: Dale Sutherland-Roberts

✨ 🌳 Celebrating Excellence at the Wood Awards 2024! The prestigious Wood Awards 2024 ceremony, held on November 20th, showcased the very best in British architecture and design. With 14 awards and 11 highly commended projects, this year’s winners demonstrated the incredible potential of sustainable timber in creating innovative, beautiful, and meaningful designs. We’re thrilled to celebrate all the entrants, particularly those using Grown in Britain (GiB) certified timber, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and local sourcing. A special mention goes to two remarkable projects: 🏆 Winner – Ebworth Stools Crafted from GiB-certified ash, this stunning collection connects education, heritage, and sustainable woodland management. A collaboration between GiB Certified members The Sylva Foundation, and National Trust, with Ash supplied from Tyler Hardwoods - also GiB certifed, these stools are not only a testament to fine craftsmanship but also a powerful example of turning challenges, like ash dieback, into opportunities. 🌟 Highly Commended – Liberty Woodland School This nature-based learning environment in London uses GiB-certified UK-grown Douglas fir (supplied by GiB Certified members Whitney Sawmills) to create spaces that blur the boundaries between indoors and out. Fantastic news! Well done to tutors and students at the Sylva Wood School. Year after year they produce stunning designs and these stools in GiB certified ash, for the National Trust, are no exception. 🥳🥳
We won! We are delighted to announce that our Ebworth Stools collection, designed and manufactured in collaboration with the National Trust, has won the Furniture Production category at this years Wood Awards. The elegant, limited-edition Ebworth stools have been created using trees felled on the Ebworth Estate due to ash dieback – a disease which could kill up to 80% of ash trees across the UK, according to The Woodland Trust. The collection entails three different designs – each inspired by a stool in the National Trust’s collection – and has been produced in small batches by students at Sylva Foundation’s wood school. “From their elegant design and sustainable nature, through to the story which these wooden furniture items tell – charting their journey from woodland to workshop and on to the end user – the Ebworth Stools embody the principles of the Wood Awards” Sebastian Cox, lead judge of Furniture and Objects. By creating beautiful, high-quality products from certified Grown in Britain, the Sylva Foundation and National Trust are bridging the gap between education and practice – while illustrating the importance of active forest management. The Wood School team share this award with three cohorts of Professional Course students who have year on year produced such fantastic quality work, and we thank our client and collaborator, the National Trust, for having faith in our unique furniture making course. Joseph Bray (Head of Wood School) collected the award on behalf of the Sylva Foundation, accompanied by Senior Tutor Phil Gullam. Read more on our blog: https://lnkd.in/eFvyY5H3
