About us

Haverstock is an architectural practice that puts people first. Our buildings are designed to enhance people’s lives, and in their own small way, make the world a better place. For us, the process of architecture is collaborative and democratic — we want clients and people who use the buildings to have a voice, and to shape the way their building ends up. We focus on specialist public-sector projects, using fresh eyes and lateral thinking to tackle varied and complex briefs. With over 40 years’ experience, we’ve designed buildings of all kinds — specialist schools (SEND/all through/resource provisions/ alternative provisions/pupil referral units), schools (children’s centres /primary/secondary/sixth form), colleges, police facilities and firing ranges, places of worship, crematoria, supported living, conservation, offices and residential. Our team is made up of proactive design professionals with complementary skills and experiences to ensure a unique and creative solution to all projects. Each job the studio takes on is led by one of our three partners. As well as the architectural services, we also provide client design advisor services, technical guidance, design review and access consultant services. We’ve won our fair share of awards, but what’s more important to us is that our contribution makes a real difference in the community, and to the people who cross the threshold every day.

We’re pleased to introduce our DfE-Compliant Inclusive Learning Hub Concept, designed to address the critical shortage of SEND places across the UK. In collaboration with Haverstock, The Blue Iris Partnership, and The terra firma Consultancy Ltd, we’ve developed flexible, sustainable 16 and 32-place hubs that seamlessly integrate into mainstream and specialist school settings. What makes our Inclusive Learning Hubs special? 👩🎓 Student-Centred Design: Spaces that support emotional regulation, sensory comfort, and therapy needs, helping students thrive in both academic and personal development. 🌍 Net-Zero and Biophilic: Sustainability at the core with features like air source heat pumps, photovoltaic panels, and natural materials that promote well-being. 🌿 Outdoor Integration: External areas tailored for sensory regulation, active play, and biodiversity, ensuring holistic support for every child. ⭐ Tailored Solutions: Designed to Spec-21 standards, we adapt each project to unique site requirements, providing robust, high-quality environments for ASD, ADHD, SEMH, and other needs. Why Now? With Ofsted’s increased focus on inclusion and pressing demand for SEND provision, our hubs empower local authorities and schools to expand capacity and make a lasting difference for vulnerable children. By choosing our solution, schools benefit from cost-effective, ready-to-go solutions that minimise disruption, prioritise inclusion, and deliver long-term value. • We are delighted to share that on Tuesday night, Hemel Crematorium was awarded the AJ Award for Community and Faith Project 2024! The judges praised the project as an ‘An uplifting’ scheme which provides a ‘sense of tranquillity’ with ‘A continuity of language and robust materiality unites this project.’ ‘The design makes what is a very difficult experience for everyone a bit more elevated,’ Embedded in the ‘exceptional’ landscaping, Hemel Crematorium provides a chapel for 140 people alongside space for congregation, crematory, administration, staff, and wider site memorial. The building’s geometric roof covers each of these functions, with its impressive timber frame, exposed internal, to lend warmth and character to the main chapel space. We are delighted by the recognition from the AJ Judges and are immensely proud of this project and the team involved in delivering it. We all know about the importance of acoustic design, in theory. The past few years, I have become more and more aware of the positive changes to acoustic standards and design in educational spaces (propelled by the BB93 document first released over 20 years ago). But today, I got to experience the extremes of acoustics, when I headed to the anechoic chamber London South Bank University , generously hosted by Shane Cryer and his team at Saint-Gobain Ecophon UK and Ireland . Going from a space that was full reverberation to a completely dead space set off my senses in a completely magical way. A bonus hearing test at the end has me even more grateful for my hearing - I just hope I am as good at actually listening!

  • Physical work has started on the Birnbeck Pier restoration project! We are hugely proud to be working as North Somerset Council’s appointed architect practice to project manage and deliver elements of the restoration and conservation of this site of heritage importance in Weston-super-Mare. Our work includes designing the landside buildings and 1888 boathouse. Contractors are now working to protect public safety and the integrity of the land, buildings and structures. Elements of this work are necessary to allow later phases project to take place, including restoring the pier itself. This phase of work includes: •Removing asbestos • Repairing the sea walls • Stabilising the 1888 boathouse • Installing security fencing and provision of welfare facilities. Work on the landside buildings is planned to start next spring to enable them to open to the public by the end of 2025. This phase of work is being #FundedbyUKGovernment from an allocation of £20m awarded to North Somerset Council by @ukgovofficial (formerly Levelling Up Fund). The overall project has been made possible thanks to funding by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, RNLI, MHCLG Digital , National Heritage Memorial Fund , Historic England and thanks to support from local people including BIRNBECK REGENERATION TRUST Read more about this project on the council’s website and in national and local media outlets – link in bio. #BirnbeckPier #WestonsuperMare #SuperWeston #Weston #Placemaking #Heritage #ConservationArchitecture #conservation #HeritageConservation #HeritageDesign North Somerset Council [Image description: Image 1: aerial view of the 1888 boathouse on Birnbeck Island before work began. • We are reflecting on our insightful experience at Education Estates® Exhibition | Conference | Awards last month! It was wonderful to connect with so many incredible educators, designers, colleagues, and collaborators, leading to some truly inspirational conversations. Thank you to Zane Putne at Noviun Architects and Iain Macrae CEng FSLL MCIBSE for co-presenting The Lighting Impact Study alongside Anna Monaghan. Highlighting the effectiveness of simple lighting adaptations in SEND environments is essential for making educational spaces accessible to all students. Thanks also to Mark Pratt, Nikola Idle, Mark Cummins and Marcus Lyon for their thought-provoking presentations on implementing inclusive SEND strategies in schools. We remain motivated to advocate for improvements to SEND accommodations and resources within mainstream environments and to pursue excellence in special school provisions, ensuring every child’s learning environment is well-equipped for their needs. Our Partner Claire and Associate Anna will be at Learning Places Scotland Conference | Exhibition | Awards in Glasgow next week and are always happy to discuss our strategies to create inclusive educational spaces. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you would like to connect! [Image 1: Claire addresses the audience from a lectern against a backdrop of brick and arched windows. • This week, we are reflecting on one of Haverstock's previous projects, Linden Farm. Completed in 2020, Linden Farm was designed to address the lack of independent living options available for autistic adults. Across the UK, young autistic adults are often given little agency in choosing where to live, frequently having to move several hours away from their families due to the limited facilities available. Recognising this gap, a Surrey family established The Simon Trust to fundraise for the creation of an alternative model of accommodation. In a pioneering partnership with Surrey County Council, Haverstock was brought on board to create a design that put residents’ needs and preferences first. The result is this innovative 10-bed supported living development that celebrates its rural setting. Our design anchors the homes to their surroundings through the integration of rich horticultural elements and a sensory garden framework. Perpetuating a sense of calm and well-being through the reduction of visual ‘noise’ with natural materials, fostering a domestic atmosphere. Linden Farm provides a safe and welcoming home that is integrated into the local community. Enabling families to stay connected, this environment is ideal for those with neurodiverse conditions, establishing a benchmark for autistic adult provisions. Featured in the Architects Journal, RIBAJ and The Guardian, Linden Farm’s importance as a pioneering project in supported living design is clear.
