Helping deaf people to leave loneliness behind and reconnect with life

About us

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a national charity that trains dogs to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds, such as the fire alarm, intruder alarms and even baby monitors. Not only do these amazing dogs act as their deaf partners' 'ears', they provide lots of love and emotional support - helping deaf people to leave loneliness behind and reconnect with life. The charity also provides a range of other personalised services which make life much easier for deaf people. To find out more about Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, read emotional stories of how our dogs change lives, or find out how to can get involved (and even sponsor a cute puppy!), please visit our website at www.hearingdogs.org.uk.

  • Being deaf or having hearing loss can be an isolating experience. Many deaf people can feel cut off from other people because of the communication barriers they face every day. These communication barriers can be even more difficult to overcome at Christmas time, as family and social gatherings, and visits to shops and other places, are more common. You can make Christmas easier for deaf people and people with hearing loss, and make them feel more included and connected, by being aware of a few simple things you can do to aid communication. To make things easier for deaf people and people with hearing loss this Christmas, download your copy of our free communication guide today using the link in the comments.

  • In light of Giving Tuesday, our Big Give Christmas Challenge is now live, and until 10th December you can DOUBLE your donation! 🎉 With your support, we will create and support more amazing hearing dog partnerships in 2025. These partnerships are life-changing, as hearing dog partner Deryck explains: “Elroy gives me a reason to get up in the morning. There are thousands of deaf people out there who are on their own. Deafness is an invisible disability, and Elroy reminds people that I’m deaf. Before, I hardly knew anyone in my neighbourhood. Now, everyone talks to me.” Learn more about this fantastic opportunity and how to donate by following the link in the comments below! 🐶

  • Did you know we teach our clever dogs both audio and visual cues? These include ‘Sit’, ‘Down’ and ‘Wait’ as well as other cues in their highly-skilled soundwork. Some deaf people don't use spoken language to communicate, so having the option to also use hand signals throughout their hearing dog partnership is essential. This also means every hearing dog graduates from training ready to support their deaf partner, whatever their preferred method of communication may be. Here is miniature poodle Nelson showing just how clever he is.

  • We are very fortunate to be partnered with four Pets at Home stores around the country, with our local volunteers working alongside store colleagues to raise vital funds for our work. The Pets Foundation Santa Paws appeal is just around the corner. If you are local, you can visit either the Cambridge Bar Hill, Handforth Cheshire, High Wycombe or York Clifton Moor stores between 25th November and Christmas Eve to donate and make a difference for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People. Thank you for your support!

  • A huge thank you to Aviva, who held a brilliant gala fundraiser in aid of Hearing Dogs last week, and a massive thank you to the many businesses and individuals who attended to raise money to help change the lives of people who are deaf or have hearing loss. The evening, held at the prestigious London Hilton, Park Lane, raised over an incredible £100,000, and those in attendance found out how our amazing dogs change the lives of their deaf partners thanks to two special VIPs. Sarah, who is partnered with hearing dog Albert, and Tasha, who is partnered with hearing dog Digby, were guests at the gala and they featured in two videos that were played to the room. Our brilliant demonstration team were also on hand to show how hearing dogs alert their deaf partners to important and life-saving sounds. Tracy Griffin, CEO for Hearing Dogs, said: “A massive thank you to Aviva for hosting such a fabulous event. The thought that went into the evening offered such a rich mix of entertainment, gastronomy and a real insight into the work of Hearing Dogs for Deaf People and our impact on those with hearing loss. “The support of businesses who share our values and the awareness raising and reach it can bring, is so important to us, and we thank all the guests, whose generosity during the evening will make a such a difference. “Thank you from all of us.”
