“I’d love to see city centres focus on reimagining what they can offer the public: life, purpose and a little joy” So Thomas Heatherwick told Dylan Jones in last Thursday’s The London Standard. In the interview, Thomas particularly highlighted the need for a radical shift in the way we use the ground floor of buildings. “Instead of endless shopping, let’s create streets filled with health and community space,” he argued. “Places where older people and families feel comfortable, and somewhere to showcase all the unbelievable creative talent [we have in our cities] …Too many buildings today fail to engage with the street – it’s as if they’re turning their backs on us.” Turning his attention to the UK capital, Thomas said: “London is an amazing city, but I think, where should I take my children this weekend? Everywhere is dominated by shopping. London has lost the confidence to be imaginary with building. “There are countries where there is a greater embedding of creative thinking and the importance of it at a strategic, national, economic, financial level. Not here. We are risk averse. We should be more adventurous, more inventive, more eccentric… We need to be brave. We’re far too negative.” Read the article here: https://lnkd.in/eKrEEG6E

About us
Heatherwick Studio is a team of 200 problem solvers dedicated to making the physical world around us better for everyone. Based out of our combined workshop and design studio in Central London, we create buildings, spaces, master-plans, objects and infrastructure. Focusing on large scale projects in cities all over the world, we prioritise those with the greatest positive social impact. Working as practical inventors with no signature style, our motivation is to design soulful and interesting places which embrace and celebrate the complexities of the real world. The approach driving everything is to lead from human experience rather than any fixed design dogma. The studio’s founder Thomas Heatherwick comes from a background immersed in materials and making. His curiosity and passion for problem-solving matured into the studio’s current design process where every architect, designer, landscape architect and maker is encouraged to challenge and contribute ideas. Positive and pragmatic, the studio’s team are collaborators whose role is to listen, question, then lead the conception and construction of special and unusual places. Ingenuity and inspiration are used to make projects that are affordable and buildable. And our client is vital, who comes on the journey and challenges our thinking; together we look for the opportunities that might traditionally be overlooked. Our best future projects are the ones that will teach us the most.

We are a proud sponsor of the Campaign of the Year Award at the annual National Sheila McKechnie Foundation (SMK) Campaigners Awards 2025. Each year, SMK celebrates the best campaigns and campaigners. They are interested in finding those who have made change happen – most effectively, creatively and courageously. That change might be in law or policy; it might be in attitudes, social norms or behaviour; it could be in how services are provided, or in the protection of a service or asset. A campaign could be aimed at righting a wrong, or holding a body to account. You can nominate a local or national individual, a movement, an organisation or a coalition - or even yourself. Visit below for info. The deadline for nominations is Fri 28 February 2025.

Heatherwick Studio has unveiled a new vision for the Belvedere, a prominent elevated riverfront space set to be reimagined as a public park in Louisville, Kentucky. First opened in 1973, the Belvedere has long been a cherished spot but suffered from years of neglect. This transformation promises to breathe new life into a site the size of four American football pitches, strengthening its connection to the Ohio River and providing the city with a prominent natural spot for the community and visitors to gather and relax. Early concept renders for the site feature a striking pavilion with a flowing, ribbon-like form, filled with lush green spaces and pedestrian-friendly pathways that seamlessly weave the city’s core into the waterfront. More than just a face-lift, the project aims to create an inviting, multi-use place where residents and visitors can come together for recreation, cultural events or simply to take a break by the river. Input from the Louisville community has played a vital role in development of the vision, with three public meetings held in January to gather insights and ideas. Stuart Wood, Executive Partner and Group Leader at Heatherwick Studio, said: “Belvedere has an incredible potential to become a new green ‘living room’ for Louisville and its people. Our design will stitch together the Ohio river front and connect it to the expansive parks beyond. We've been listening to the community and hear a huge appetite for something powerful, exciting and new to happen.” Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg unveiled the early concept renders during his State of the City address last week, emphasising the need for revitalisation: “The Belvedere is 50 years old and showing signs of age. Do we continue to let it crack and crumble, or do we do something new, big, and bold?” The project remains in the design phase, with construction expected to begin in 2026. Once completed, it will mark our first endeavour in Kentucky, joining a portfolio of projects in the US, including two Google Campuses in California, Little Island and Lantern House in New York City, and the new Davidson Park in Milwaukee. What a fantastic & inspirational afternoon our L3 3D/Architecture students were treated to at the groundbreaking Heatherwick studio today! The terrific Matt Bell kindly hosted our students for a stimulating hour where the students got to learn first hand information & knowledge behind some of Heatherwick studio outstanding designs and structures. The students had the opportunity to ask questions, have a roam around the studio and take an up close look at the models & designs on display. What was also remarkable was that just before the tour ended, the students were very fortunate & lucky enough to hear from the man himself, Thomas Heatherwick! He kindly spoke to the students about their course & their college, especially since he himself was once a student at Kingsway college. Mr. Heatherwick imparted some truly encouraging & heartening advice about creating interesting & dynamic designs to our enraptured students. Thank you for taking the time to speak with our learners & make their day! 🙏🏽 Special thanks goes out to Matt Bell & the team at Heatherwick studio for taking the time to motivate, encourage & inspire our students 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 Thanks also to my team & colleagues at Capital City College Jennifer O. We’re thrilled that Thomas Heatherwick’s book Humanise has been shortlisted in the art & #architecture category of the British Book Design & Production Awards! Anyone who's picked up the book knows that it’s no straightforward text book, but a lovingly put-together visual creation designed by Ben Prescott. Good luck to all the other gorgeous books in the running too!

We are delighted that our Xi'an CCBD project received the 2024 CRL High Quality Design Award at China Resources Land's Design Conference in Xi'an last week. It was a thrilling moment for the team at Heatherwick studio to meet again with our client and collaborators on site after the opening of the project last month. Seeing the public experiencing the building and public realm was key and we look forward to new exciting projects together! #xianccbd #heatherwickstudio #chinaresorcesland #ceramicarchitecture #futurecities #humanise

We are very excited indeed to announce that a brand-new version of Thomas Heatherwick’s book ‘Making’ has just been published by Thames & Hudson. Featuring sixteen new projects and fresh photography, this updated and revised fourth edition is the definitive publication of our studio’s work over a period of 30 years. Filling almost 650 pages (and featuring 750 illustrations), the book tells the story of more than 150 of our projects, from London to Shanghai, New York and Bogotá. New additions since ‘Making’ was last updated a decade ago include city districts like Xi’an CCBD in China, Azabudai Hills in Tokyo and the forthcoming London Olympia. The idea is to give an in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at our creative processes, now ingrained in the DNA of the studio itself, and to hopefully provide a dose of insight and inspiration for anyone with an interest in design. In the words of World Architecture News, it’s “an adventure into the mind of one of the industry’s most captivating designers, well worth the hours you will lose within its pages … aglow with images and passionate commentary from Heatherwick himself”. If you’d like to find out more, or order a copy, link is below.
