  • We are looking forward to next week's webinar - 'Mushrooms, gut microbiota and cancer'. In this webinar, nutritional therapist Kirsten Chick presents her recent literature review researching the anti-cancer properties of medicinal mushrooms. The focus was on their interaction with the gut microbiota as a potential anti-cancer mechanism. This innovative perspective has only been explored in the last 6 years, and so the majority of studies included in Kirsten's review were pre-clinical. Nevertheless, the project offers some fascinating insights, as well as highlighting gaps in the research. While the results are not sufficient to suggest a treatment protocol, Kirsten will discuss the implications this research might have for clinical practice. Kirsten Chick is a Nutritional Therapist specialising in integrative oncology, and has worked in private practice since 2003. She is the Nutrition Lead on the Scientific and Medical Advisory Panel at Yes to Life, and a member of the British Society for Integrative Oncology. Kirsten has lectured in nutrition and biochemistry at a number of colleges, currently at the Northern College of Acupuncture and East Sussex College (HE Dept.). She has written and co-written several courses, and contributed a module to the Horizons e-learning course “An Introduction to Integrative Oncology for Healthcare Professionals". Kirsten completed her own MSc. in Nutrition Science and Practice at the Northern College of Acupuncture in 2024. Kirsten’s book “Nutrition Brought to Life” was published in 2020 and is currently in its second edition. She also contributed recipes to and wrote the foreword to “Food for Life: Recipes to Inspire You”, published in 2022. Kirsten has hosted IHCAN magazine’s podcast for nutrition and functional medicine practitioners since its first episode in 2023. Previous integrative oncology conferences Kirsten has spoken at include Your Life and Cancer 2020, Your Life and Cancer 2022, Yes to Life Annual Conference June 2023: Building your integrative cancer care team, Yes to Life Annual Conference October 2023: Working with your integrative cancer care team. Prior to training in nutrition, Kirsten worked in languages, using her original BA (Hons) in German and French, and then in event management and the music industry. Her career change was inspired after recovering from a soft tissue sarcoma diagnosed in her late 20s. • We are looking forward to this evening's webinar - 'Exercise medicine in cancer care'. In this webinar Joshila DeVile will cover the mechanisms, role and recommended guidelines for exercise in the cancer continuum as well as touch on the barriers to implementation and participation. Joshila DeVile is a specialist oncology and lymphoedema Physiotherapist who successfully pioneered an exercise medicine service for GenesisCare - a private cancer care provider. During her time as Head of Exercise Medicine, she implemented and scaled this service nationally whilst developing an exercise app to help further expand a virtual exercise offering. This was effective at removing the common barriers to exercise and enabled the service to reach more patients. She recognised a gap in lymphoedema management so completed further specialist training and took up a post at the Royal Surrey County Hospital. Joshila completed her undergraduate Physiotherapy degree in South Africa (2000) and gained a postgraduate certificate in Exercise Medicine Oncology (2020) from Western Australia. Her passion is empowering both patients and health care practitioners around using exercise as medicine in the oncology field. This is achieved by presenting at national and international conferences, hosting webinars and as a guest lecturer at the University of Winchester. Sign up for the webinar here if you are a BSIO member: https://lnkd.in/eb3Mmk2p Non-members are also invited to join the live webinar or access the recording for a fee of £10. • If you haven't already, please sign up for tomorrow evening's webinar - ‘We were all in it together in a way’: Group acupuncture in supportive cancer care. In this webinar Mandy Brass discusses her recent research comparing group with individual acupuncture in an NHS cancer care setting. The acupuncture service at Dimbleby Cancer Care, Guy’s Hospital, provides both a seated group clinic and a one-to-one clinic. Mandy became interested in comparing the outcomes and patient experience of both clinical settings and exploring their interrelationships in order to inform future development of the acupuncture service. The study revealed statistically significant improvements in symptoms across both clinics with participants mostly reporting a positive experience. Whilst most group acupuncture participants found the setting beneficial, those who did not still experienced symptomatic relief. The importance of this study lies in its potential to inform patient-centred acupuncture provision within the constraints of space, time and budgetary resources. Mandy Brass is the lead acupuncturist at Dimbleby Cancer Care in Guy’s Cancer Centre, part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust. She has been practising acupuncture for over 20 years, specialising in supporting cancer patients through all stages of their journey, from diagnosis and treatment to survivorship or palliative care. Mandy recently completed her MSc in research from the Northern College of Acupuncture. Her research project, which evaluated the outcomes and patient experience of group with individual acupuncture in an NHS cancer care setting, won the Research Council for Complementary Medicine’s (RCCM) George Lewith Memorial Prize for best early career research project. Mandy is a member of the British Acupuncture Council and the BSIO.
