Are we ready to lose another? 🥺 The African Penguin was recently uplisted to Critically Endangered on the official IUCN Red List, pushing this iconic species closer to extinction. 💔 Human activities like overfishing and climate pollution have driven their numbers to just 1% of their original population. But hope is not lost. BirdLife South Africa is working tirelessly with Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) to reverse this decline by creating new penguin colonies, developing innovative monitoring systems and tackling resource competition. Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) are sites of global importance to the planet's overall health and the persistence of biodiversity. Guyana is identifying KBAs that will help it reach its goal to protect 30% of the country by 2030. About 85% of Guyana is covered in forest and home to more than 8,000 species of plants and more than 1,800 animal species. The latest update of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ shows that 38% of the world’s trees are at risk of extinction. This alarming number calls for implementing much-needed conservation actions to protect these vulnerable species. The report also overlays that Colombia is one of the many countries using Red List assessments to inform national conservation action planning: 7 species of Endangered and Critically Endangered Magnolia have been used to designate 5 new Key Biodiversity Areas, which will be used by local and national governments to inform spatial planning. Together, we must act swiftly to protect our planet's precious biodiversity before it's too late. 🌎
