It's Climate Week NYC by the Climate Group, and with the Net Purpose team in attendance, we wanted to share some quick industry highlights about climate performance and disclosure in major indices. What is going well, and what needs to improve? 📊 The latest company disclosures show that total Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions in the S&P 500 decreased by 0.2% and increased by 2.6% in the MSCI World Index compared to the previous reporting year. Increases in Scope 3 emissions negated substantial reductions in Scope 1 and 2 emissions. 📚 The latest company disclosures show that Scope 3 reporting has improved significantly since 2018, with 72% of companies in the S&P 500 disclosing, up from 49% in 2018, and 73.5% of companies in the MSCI World Index disclosing, up from 47% in 2018. 🌱 Scope 4, or avoided emissions, disclosures have also become more common, with at least 35 companies in the S&P 500 and 78 in the MSCI World Index now disclosing. We’re very pleased to see the increase in disclosure of Scope 3 emissions in major indices, which can empower investors to identify industry leaders and improvers and support their engagement with companies. The prevalence of Scope 4, or avoided emissions, disclosures is also positive. While there is work to be done to standardise measurement practices, we believe this will progress as disclosures increase. In the meantime, Net Purpose’s standardised calculations can support comparison between companies. However, whilst disclosure is useful, climate outcomes are what truly matter, and these must be improved if we’re to meet global climate targets. We are thrilled to announce that WHEB will be adopting the ‘Sustainability Impact’ label on the FP WHEB Sustainability Fund in the coming weeks. This makes it one of the first funds to use this label since the Financial Conduct Authority’s Sustainability Disclosure Requirements (#SDR) regime came in on 31st July this year. An updated version of the Fund’s prospectus will be published in line with the policy’s disclosure requirements and the name of the Fund will be changed to the FP WHEB Sustainability Impact Fund. George Latham comments: “Impact investing is all we do and all we have ever done. When the policy statement was first announced we said that WHEB would make use of the ‘sustainability impact’ label for our UK fund.
