About us
Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke provides expert care and support to anyone at risk of or currently living with chest, heart and stroke conditions. We also fund local ground-breaking research into better treatments, care and prevention. Working with people of all ages across the province, we’ve been delivering our services since 1946, carrying out extensive research into how to prevent these conditions, alongside ‘on the ground’ support. As a charity, almost 90% of our work is funded thanks to donations from the public.

International Men’s Day celebrates inspirational men within our communities and a local Belfast man is the epitomes of what it means to be an inspiration. Aaron Brown sadly lost his brother to a heart attack, and around the same time, saw his mum battle through two heart attacks and a stroke. Despite going through such a difficult time, Aaron wanted to do something positive to help others affected by these illnesses and fundraised for our work after his mum received support from our team on her recovery journey. Read Aaron's story on our website. If you are inspired to take on the marathon as part of #TeamNICHS, visit nichs.org.uk/events

Do you know about the silent killer heart condition that can increase your risk of having a stroke by up to FIVE times? ❣️ It’s #AtrialFibrillationAwarenessWeek. Atrial fibrillation, or AF, is the most common type of irregular heart rhythm. It causes an irregular and often abnormally fast heart rate. 🔴 AF sometimes causes symptoms, but the only way to know you have it for sure is to get checked during one of our NICHS Well Checks or with your GP. 🔴 If you have any symptoms of AF, make an appointment with your GP ASAP Find out more about AF at https://lnkd.in/eE4QfQjV

This increase is predicted to only continue into the future 😰 That's why we believe it’s vital that more people are aware of heart failure, what it is, and it's symptoms. ❤️ The most common symptoms of heart failure are: 🔴 Breathlessness 🔴 Exhaustion 🔴 Swollen ankles 📣 If you have any of these symptoms, get it checked by your GP. ⚠️ Catching heart failure early is important as the sooner it is diagnosed, the sooner you can start the right treatment for you. At the beginning of 2015, Clodagh Dunlop, Ciara Murray and Lisa Lecky were strangers - three young women in their thirties, from different parts of Northern Ireland, each with their lives ahead of them. Little could they have known that later that year, they would all suffer life-changing strokes and that their paths would cross after being admitted to the Regional Acquired Brain Injury Unit (RABIU) at Musgrave Park Hospital.... Your gift will help bring hope for the future to others like Clodagh, Lisa and Ciara. Almost 90% of our income comes from donations, so it’s only thanks to our generous supporters the NICHS Care team can be here to pass on this gift. Please donate what you can today to help change a life. https://lnkd.in/eMt9ByCK
