Last week we hosted a panel discussion bringing Deep Tech founders and entrepreneurs together with synthetic biology PhD students from Imperial College London, UCL and The University of Manchester to discuss commercialising engineering biology. Led by Lucy McGowan, students also had the opportunity to learn about the Science Creates ecosystem and take a tour of our state-of-the-art Old Market incubator. It was brilliant to work with the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in BioDesign Engineering on this event as part of its annual retreat, supporting its mission to train and empower the next generation of leaders in this rapidly growing field. A massive thank you to all our panelists for sharing their insights and advice on breaking into the startup world, it was great to see the room so engaged in each of your individual journeys and motivations:  ▪️Arne Scott from Dimension Biotechnologies ▪️Veronica Greco from CDotBio ▪️Marcos Villeda Hernandez from PhotoClear ▪️Bethany Eldridge from neo-fossil We look forward to seeing what’s next for these future innovators! #DeepTech #EngBio #SynBio #startups

  • Congratulations to Science Creates member and Accelerate graduate neo-fossil for securing a spot in Phase 2 of remove’s Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) startup accelerator programme for Cohort 7. From an initial 20 Europe-based startups in Phase 1, neo-fossil was one of just eight impressive CDR companies selected for its innovative approach to using engineering biology to harvest atmospheric carbon dioxide into new fossils, storing these emissions for centuries. As a result, the climate biotech pioneer will now receive a further five months of tailored support covering specific CDR and entrepreneurship challenges such as policy insights, life cycle assessment, fundraising strategies and IP management. We look forward to seeing the continued growth of the neo-fossil team throughout this second phase as they push the boundaries of CDR innovation. #DeepTech #EngBio #climatetech #startups

  • Driving innovation and pushing the boundaries of scientific discovery requires diverse perspectives and talent. Yet, a decade after the United Nations established the first International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS), there is still a significant gender gap within STEM fields worldwide. Women continue to be underrepresented, particularly in senior positions, and make up just 22% of the workforce in cutting-edge fields like AI. These disparities not only limit diversity in scientific advancements but also hinder global efforts to achieve gender equality, leaving the world off track for the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goal. At Science Creates, our mission is to help solve the world’s biggest challenges affecting people and the planet through Deep Tech. As we look to the future, we recognise that engaging young people in STEM from an early age is essential to building a more inclusive scientific community to tackle these global issues. In 2021, we established the independent charity Science Creates Outreach to diversify and empower the future generation of innovators - aligning with this year’s IDWGS focus of ‘building a future for women in science’. So far, over 3,000 learners have participated in hands-on workshops, exclusive lab tours and conversations with scientists, providing early exposure to real-world science and research environments. By creating inclusive environments, the charity aims to spark curiosity and confidence, particularly in girls and underrepresented groups, inspiring them to pursue a future in STEM. We’d also like to thank Science CreatesLucy McGowan and Holly Fisher who will be attending the University of Bristol’s IDWGS event tomorrow as panellists, sharing their experiences and offering career guidance to local women and non-binary students in STEM. Here’s to a future where everyone has equal opportunity to shape the world through science. • Congratulations to Science Creates Accelerate graduate Nellie Technologies for securing a major carbon removal offtake agreement with Zurich Insurance. Over the next five years, Zurich Insurance will receive Nellie Technologies’ verified carbon dioxide removal (CDR) certificates from its UK sites, which will be transformative in accelerating the climate tech startup’s scale of operations from pilot to full-scale CDR deployment. Since 2022, Nellie Technologies has dedicated three years to designing, developing and deploying its unique CDR system, producing biomass to convert into biochar for the agricultural sector. This agreement is a strong indication of the commercial viability of engineered CDR systems and their potential to drive large-scale environmental impact. 🌍 It’s brilliant to see Nellie Technologies achieve this significant milestone, fueling its exciting growth plans and mission to combat climate change. Big Nellie News! And what a way to celebrate our third birthday! 🌿🎂 We're proud to announce that Zurich Insurance has entered into a multi-year, multi-tonnage agreement with Nellie to receive verified carbon dioxide removal certificates from our UK sites. It's transformative in several ways: 🌱 After three years of hard work developing and building our bioengineered CO2 removal systems, it's our first major agreement and more-than-demonstrates the potential for our pragmatic, climate-fixing technologies. 🏭 It also validates our vision to scale our systems; we'll be growing our pilot operations to full scale carbon dioxide removal deployment over the coming year and this will help deliver many of the societal and economic co-benefits that are baked into our business. 🌍 We have a unique system; we produce biomass (that removes CO2 from the atmosphere as it grows) and we turn it into biochar which is used in the UK agricultural sector. We're distinctive in that our operational system boundary allows us near total control over the removal and sequestration process. This sale shows that a smart approach to engineered carbon dioxide removal systems can be commercialised and deliver meaningful environmental impact at scale. Our alignment with Zurich's climate ambitions couldn't be clearer; we're a decarboniser of last resort. Removing CO2 should only happen when an organisation has done all it can to prevent their emissions in the first place. And this is what's happening here. Zurich's approach to reducing their emissions profile is exactly why Nellie Technologies was built; with regards to CO2 emissions, it's “stop what you can and remove the rest”. It's this balanced approach that will, eventually, lead to fixing the climate and we're proud to be part of it. We're incredibly grateful to Chris Minter and Zurich's sustainability team for working with us to put this agreement together. The muddy shoes suffered during their site visit over the summer were hopefully worthwhile! #carbondioxideremoval #fixtheclimate #UKSustainability #ZurichSustainability #CDR #BeyondNetZero Made in Wales. For the World.
