🔥 Hot off the press 🔥 In issue 117, the founder and co-CEO of Ennismore reveals how he turned a small indie brand into the world’s fastest-growing lifestyle hospitality company, while the leader of Dubai-based LW Design reflects on how the industry has evolved through 25 years in business. Elsewhere, we take a cable car through the Tyrolean Alps to spend time at a chalet-style retreat; explore a luxury cabana concept on the Athens Riviera; and head to a British university town to check out a department store-turned hotel. Plus, after a spate of signings in Tokyo, we take a closer look at the city’s current performance and future pipeline, alongside reviews of new openings from both homegrown groups and international players. There’s also a hotel construction update from THP - TOPHOTELPROJECTS, and a round-up of AHEAD winners from recent ceremonies in Asia and the Americas. 🏔️ Inside Sleeper 117: A new high-altitude hotel hideaway has landed in Adelboden, courtesy of self-proclaimed accidental hotelier Grant Maunder. Following his successful reinvention of a three-star hotel in the Swiss village back in 2011, Maunder has returned for a new venture, this time teaming up with Amsterdam-based design studio Nicemakers to transform a century-old chalet into The Brecon Adelboden, an 18-room retreat that eschews the clichés of traditional ski lodges, instead opting for homely interiors with Mid-Century moments. 🦌 Inside Sleeper 117: With Kimpton’s recent debut in Budapest came the unveiling of a mythology-inspired design scheme by Marcel Wanders, who delved deep into Hungary’s history to develop interiors inspired by its folklore. Whimsical details have been woven throughout throughout Kimpton BEM Budapest, from wallcoverings depicting dreamscapes of mountains, soaring hot air balloons and mystical allusions to astrology and the stars, to a large bronze depiction of Hungary’s legendary ‘white stag’. 🎓 Inside Sleeper 117: Visitors to Oxford from years gone-by may be familiar with the charm of Boswells, a much-loved department store that was long a pillar of the city’s high street. Following its closure in 2020, the site caught the eye of developers Reef Origin, who set about transforming it into a 101-key lifestyle hotel – aptly named The Store. The developer’s in-house design team UrbanR partnered with Isla James Interiors to bring the property into a new era, filling it with design details that allude to its past, including an open-plan lobby bar with large shopfront-style windows, and the original department store sign still taking pride of place on the hotel’s façade. 🌿 Inside Sleeper 117: Having made his mark on the Japanese hospitality scene with the original Trunk (Hotel) in 2017, followed by the one-suite Trunk (House) in 2019, founder and CEO Yoshitaka Nojiri is now pushing ahead with ambitious plans to open 26 new properties by 2030, starting with Trunk (Hotel) Yoyogi Park. Much like others in the portfolio, this latest venture perfectly embodies Nojiri's vision of creating immersive boutique hotels that are deeply embedded in their community, each embodying a local spirit for a true sense of place. Here in the Tokyo neighbourhood of Tomigaya, a dialogue between Keiji Ashizawa, Norm Architects and Trunk Atelier delivers 'Japandi' minimalism. 🇬🇧 Inside Sleeper 117: Lifestyle brand Hyde Hotels is known for its vibrant, contemporary flair – a spirit that Studio Moren has artfully infused throughout the brand’s first UK outpost. For the architecture and interior design of Hyde London City, the studio sought to honour the era in which the Victorian-age structure was built, reinstating details that might have been found in the original, featuring alongside rich jewel tones and patterns depicting famed Victorian-age discoveries.
