Thanks again to Nick Bolton and Steve Westmore MICFor from Tree Frontiers Ltd for sharing their table at the Oxford University Development quiz last Thursday. Our SOLID team had a fantastic evening, although we will be doing a bit more research before our next quiz night to see if we can climb a little higher up the leader board! The event helped to raise money for the Oxford Food Hub. Oxford Food Hub rescues surplus food from wholesalers, supermarkets and restaurants, redistributing it to charities and community organisations across Oxfordshire.

A huge thank you to Beard for hosting such a fantastic Cyclathon yesterday in aid of the University of Oxford's Sport & Community fund. Eight members of our SOLID team rose to the challenge and we are very proud to have made it into the top ten, placing ninth overall. Together the SOLID team covered an impressive 129.8 miles over six hours. Twenty teams took part overall and collectively rode the distance from Oxford to Moscow! An amazing £16,400 was raised for the cause. Congratulations to OXFORD ARCHITECTS LLP for placing first overall and to our riders Tom Roberts, Gill Sherwood, Kim Murray, Sarah Hutchinson-Jarman, David Girling, Richard Young, Alexander Harris and Mark Harris for the SOLID effort! #team #cyclathon #cycle #Oxford #OxfordUniversity

Check out these photos David Girling captured last month! The new owner of a late 1920s Arts and Crafts mock-Tudor house, relatively unchanged since first construction, is undertaking some sympathetic refurbishment and alteration works. During David's site inspection he spotted this rather charming vintage fire extinguisher in the attic. It is dated "Manufactured 1933", but a sticker has been applied to it which says " It may be safely used on Incendiary Bombs....". Which presumably dates the sticker to the early 1940's - during the blitz. The day after finding this fire extinguisher, David undertook his fire warden training for the office with GH Safety Ltd, which thankfully only needed to cover tackling the sort of fire that may happen in an office and not incendiary bombs! #Antique #Heritage #Heritageproperty #Fireextinguisher #fire #incaseoffire #engineering #site #siteinspection 

Tom Roberts captured this footage of some fantastic rebar on a recent site visit. The project involves the conversion of an existing stone barn into a two-storey workshop/storage space. To achieve this, a steel frame will be installed internally within the existing building, with columns tight to the stone walls to maximise usable space. New foundations are required to support the steel frame. SOLID devised a ground beam and pad foundation arrangement in lieu of a time-consuming and costly full underpin of the existing building. This allowed the new foundations to be installed without undermining the existing building. A beautiful internal shot of Copper Bottom's double height gallery space. The windows and doors on the south-facing garden façade are sized to make the most of the aspect. However, the angled roof plane cantilevers out to shade the first-floor rooms from the hot summer sun, whilst allowing the low winter sun to enter. The first floor also has ‘creases’ across the surface to protect the ground floor openings. These creases run around the entirety of the building and on the north side act as a porch for the entrance and bike shed. SOLID are proud to have been appointed as Structural Engineers on The Lodge, working alongside Ashleigh Clarke Architects Limited. The project involved extending a stunning historic property in The Cotswolds. Whilst not listed, the property fell within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a conservation area. SOLID worked closely with Ashleigh Clarke, and local planning consultants, to help find the appropriate balance between old and new.
