On day three of National Tree Week, we are sharing the signs of the oak apple gall wasp (biorhiza pallida) that Naomi stumbled upon recently 🍎 This is not an *actual* apple though. These apple-like galls appear on oak twigs from May/June time after female oak apple-like gall wasps lay their eggs in an oak leaf bud. The chemicals released by their hatching larvae signals to the oak to grow the gall (the tissue that encapsulates the insects and feeds and protects them as they develop.) These lovely little galls house many chambers in which the larvae develops, the adults then eat their way out in June/July. There are over 30 gall wasp species in the UK, but no need to worry as they do not cause any significant harm or damage. Day two of National Tree Week brings us the not-so-humble ash tree🌳 Jamie stumbled across this beast which, believe it or not, had actually fully collapsed several years ago. But wait for this, since some of the roots stayed intact in the ground after its collapse, the tree was able to survive and adapt to its new position. Despite its fall, it developed a renewed crown from the fallen stem, and as you can see, its showing great vitality! This process is known as phoenix regeneration. No intervention needed. Just a simple case of letting nature take its course. It's National Tree Week 🌳 We’re inspired by the many roles trees play in protecting biodiversity and fighting climate change. So much so, each day this week we will be sharing different trees that the team have come across recently.🌱 First up is this wych elm (ulmus glabra), spotted on a site visit in South Wales. Having been decimated by Dutch elm disease back in 1920s in the UK, seeing a wych elm in this mature state is a rare sight these days! Both its size and decay features indicate that this specimen was attributed veteran status. Side note: whilst this tree may look friendly and approachable, we discovered a rather healthy wasps' nest within it.
