For International Women’s Day, we’re highlighting the incredible women driving XR innovation. 🚀
Be it virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mixed reality (MR) or haptics, these trailblazing women are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the mental health space.
Meet some of the change-makers:
• May Abdalla, Weareanagram, whose solution for staff and clinicians aims to positively impact their empathy to patients
• Manjul Rathee, BFB Labs, whose solution aims to combine immersive mobile gaming, a CBT approach and real-time data monitoring to engage adolescents and improve treatment adherence
• Gabriela Isas and Dr Ellie Kallis Ph.D, Good With, whose solution aims to not only relieve financial anxiety but also improve confidence in money management and enhance financial capability in young people
• Laura Stembridge, Let The Inside Out, whose solution aims to improve mental health by offering personalised content and vetted mental health experts in a trusted environment

• Morag Maskey, XR Therapeutics, whose solution aims to empower therapists through custom-built digital environments to engage directly with clients within real-world scenarios
• Persis Jade Marvalla, ZECORA URA THEATRE, whose arts-based XR simulation is designed to transform nursing training by enhancing empathy and the use of affective touch
Significant gender disparities still exist in many areas of health tech such as inequitable access to investment and the wide-ranging impacts of male-centric models of health.
We’re proud to be supporting efforts to #AccelerateAction on gender equality.

On the same day that UCLPartners, in collaboration with The Health Foundation, shared our report AI in London healthcare: The reality behind the hype attended the Turing AI Fellowship showcase & AdSoLve Co-Creation workshop.
It was great to hear all about the potential of LLMs to improve mental health and the ongoing work by QMUL to ensure that LLMs are effectively identifying moments of change, improving temporal reasoning, benchmarking and evaluation. We also heard from international colleagues who are already deploying AI for MH as well as looking at using AI to advance precision in treatment of depression.

It was great to join last's week Mental Health Innovation Network on AI and mental health (big thanks to Aahuti Rai and Ross O'Brien for organising)
Lots of optimism about how AI could support people's mental health but also lots of knotty tensions and questions that need to be considered:
- Should AI enhance (ambient scribes, clinical tools) or replace human support in mental health services? Most of us feel that human-to-human therapeutic relationships can't be replaced. But given the huge unmet need for mental health support, both in the UK but also globally, how can we keep our minds open to the role that AI could play at scale?
- How do we ensure that we focus on improving mental health outcomes not just engagement? We need chatbots/digital therapists that can support people to recover - not create dependencies
- Frontline mental health support isn't solely provided by the NHS, the charity sector is also a big provider. But not all charities are in the financial position or have the risk appetite to embed AI in the way they work or their services. How can we learn from those that are like Matthew Hill FRSA at Rethink?
