Wishing a very happy Christmas to all of our students, staff, alumni and global family who are celebrating. May your day be merry and bright!
QGI was established following the work of the Women’s Forum that was set up in 1999, with the support of the then Vice Chancellor, to progress gender equality in Queen’s. A series of listening exercises, led by a group of senior women, engaged with women at all grades across the University and resulted in a portfolio of recommendations to address inequalities. These were adopted in full and work over the last 25 years continues to address gender imbalance through initiatives, projects and influencing structures and policy.

Delighted to be able to contribute and share some practical approaches to EDI. It's something that, as academics, we're very good at trying to improve and do well for our students. However, when it comes to doing the same for ourselves and colleagues, we often fall a little short. Often though, not intentionally. Fingers crossed for an engaging session, and hopefully it drives a thirst for more. This is going to be a thought provoking start to the new year if the wee preview I saw is anything to go by. Two excellent colleagues and committed communicators. Important issues too. When Queen’s opened its doors in 1845, women were largely absent from campus life, and our walls heavily adorned with the portraits of men. For many years, the only portrait of a woman to hang in the Great Hall was that of Queen Victoria. The Queen's University Belfast Gender Initiative has taken significant steps to redress this imbalance, actively commissioning portraits of influential women associated with the University. We’ve achieved immense progress on the journey towards gender equality over the years, having recently been awarded Gold University status by the prestigious Athena Swan charter. Recent additions including those of Baroness Arlene Foster DBE PC and Dr. Raja Al Gurg's portraits in the Great Hall both celebrate the accomplishments of their respective roles in politics and business, and most importantly, remind women and girls everywhere to take their rightful place in our society. The University continues to commission portraits of remarkable women who have contributed to the legacy of Queen’s and have further unveilings planned including an upcoming portrait of Monica McWilliams. #LoveQUB #GenderEquality #AthenaSwan
We have unveiled two brand-new portraits of influential women which will hang in the Great Hall. The portraits feature Queen’s alumnus, and one of Northern Ireland’s most prominent political figures Baroness Arlene Foster DBE PC, as well as leading Dubai businesswoman and Queen’s Honorary Graduate, Her Excellency Dr. Raja Al Gurg. The paintings will form part of our renowned portrait collection, on display in the Great Hall, and will join portraits of many notable figures with connections to the University throughout our 180-year history. Earlier this year we became the first institution on the island of Ireland, and second in the UK, to receive the prestigious Athena Swan Gold Award, which recognised our commitment to promoting gender equality. As part of this commitment, we are continuing to address gender imbalance within our artwork collection and to promote the presence of women across all sectors of society. Former President of Ireland Mary McAleese and prominent trade union activist Baroness May Blood are already celebrated in artwork at Queen’s, and the critically acclaimed painting ‘Out of the Shadows’ by Michelle Rogers proudly hangs in our Council Chamber to depict the roles of women right across the University. Baroness Foster’s roles as the first female leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and the first female First Minister of Northern Ireland marked a historic milestone in Northern Ireland’s political landscape, which was long dominated by men. As Chairperson and Managing Director of the Easa Saleh Al Gurg Group, Dr Al Gurg is one of the most notable female business leaders in the Middle East. She is also dedicated to shaping education, serving on the board of a number of notable universities, including the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU), which we are proud to have helped establish. Local artists Kathryn Warden and Catherine Creaney created the portraits, with Kathryn painting Baroness Foster and Catherine painting Dr. Al Gurg.
