About us

Adoption England Vision is to modernise adoption to better meet the needs of children and families to to ensure that: 1) Adopters from diverse communities are recruited, prepared, and supported to meet children's needs. 2) Adopted people maintain relationships with people important to them and have a good understanding of the reasons why they were adopted. 3) Children and young people, adopted adults, adoptive and birth families are listened to and have an influence in the services and practice provided nationally and regionally. 4) Children move in with their permanent family in a timely way. On Wednesday 15th January 2025, voluntary adoption agencies (VAAs) from across the UK are taking part in a national campaign, Big Adoption Day 2025, highlighting the need for more adoptive families for children at a time when thousands of children are still waiting in care. Big Adoption Day, led by the UK’s first children’s charity Coram with the Consortium of Voluntary Adoption Agencies UK (CVAA), will see participating agencies hosting in-person and online events in their local areas, and celebrating the real-life stories of families who have adopted, to encourage anyone interested in exploring adoption to find out more. To find out more about the events in your area, please see the full list of VAA events happening below: https://lnkd.in/eWcCM5wb

Research in Practice has launched a range of materials and resources for use in the training and supervision of social workers and contact supervisors, as well as in the training of adopters. At the heart of these resources is the voice of the lived experience of adopted children, young people, and birth relatives. Their perspectives play a key role in shaping the content, ensuring that the experiences of those directly affected are heard and understood. Some really good considerations here for adoptive parents, birth families, adopted people and professionals to consider in helping navigate future relationships for the benefit of everyone. Most importantly for vulnerable children whose lives will be deeply impacted by the quality of consideration about their current and future needs. As a system we are deep in exploration about how to make significant systemic change to adoption practice. These research articles and tools are well worth a read. Family group conferences change lives by putting families front and centre of decision-making, enabling them to make a plan for and with a child and address concerns about the child. It’s about decisions being led by those who know and love them the best. Family group conference are used internationally – from New Zealand to Norway. They are the only family-led decision making process that are well evidence with evaluations proving they safely avert children going into care and are underpinned by a set of principles and standards. The Children’s Wellbeing Bill presents the Government with the opportunity to give every child the legal right to a family group conference if there is a concern about their care or protection. This would be groundbreaking That’s why Family Rights Group is calling on the Government to enshrine the right for families to an family group conference in forthcoming legislation and invest in local authorities to make that a reality. #childwelfare #families #children

There's lots to learn from yesterday's data release on looked after children in England. We've started by looking at what it can tell us about how the child welfare system is (and isn't!) supporting children to stay safely in, and remain connected to, their family and friends. The need for urgent reform is clear - as is our work to influence the new Government's approach including in the upcoming Children's Wellbeing Bill. We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments https://lnkd.in/eh6gbup5
